Junior Architect (Early Career, 0-2yrs) — Hyderabad (Full-Time, On-Site)
About Maqam
Founded in 2024, Maqam is a spatial design practice that responds to the particularities of place. Our work grows out of research, uncovering the embedded knowledge, skills, materials, and stories that shape each context. From these, we develop new architectural languages that are both metabolic and adaptive, rooted in tradition yet tuned to the present.
The Role
We're looking for a Junior Architect, early career, 0 to 2 years experience, to join our studio in Hyderabad. The role goes beyond drafting and coordination, it's about participating in a design process that is inquisitive, collaborative, and deeply connected to the world around it. You'll work across design development, research, and experimentation, from material studies and digital modelling to on-site fabrication and documentation. Real work from the start, not busywork while you wait for something more interesting to come your way.
Who We're Looking For
We're less interested in where you've worked, and more in how you think. You might be at the beginning of your career or looking to recalibrate toward more meaningful work, either way, you're someone who:
- approaches architecture as a way of questioning and understanding the world
- is curious about materials, making, and the systems behind them
- values research and self-initiated inquiry
- can think critically yet work hands-on
- takes initiative rather than waiting to be told
- communicates clearly and collaborates generously, but more importantly, kindly.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture or related field
- Proficiency in Rhino, AutoCAD, and Adobe Suite (Grasshopper a plus)
- Strong conceptual and graphic communication skills
- Eagerness to learn, adapt, and contribute to ongoing studio research
Compensation & Work Culture
We believe architecture should value both the intellect and the labour it demands. Compensation for this role runs ₹30,000 to ₹35,000 per month.
The studio runs six day week, split into two distinct kinds of work. Monday to Friday, 9 to 6, is commissioned project work, client driven design and delivery, flexible around your commitments as long as you communicate ahead. Saturday, 10 to 6, is kept for something different: growth, craft, and exposure beyond your own project (more on that below).
Respect, here, runs in a specific order. First, respect for yourself and your own goals. Then your commitment to the studio. Then your colleagues. Then the studio as an institution. A studio works best when the people in it show up wholeheartedly, and are well taken care of in return.
Growth & Studio Culture
At Maqam, growth is personal, defined by each individual and supported by the studio. Whether your curiosity leans toward design, materials, technology, or eventually running a studio of your own, we build pathways for it through workshops, mentorship, cross-project exposure, and responsibilities tailored to where you're headed.
Saturdays, 10 to 6, are kept for a different kind of work. Craft workshops, model-making, visits to projects that aren't your own if you're curious what someone else at the studio is building, or your own personal work, using our resources. We also try to make room for film screenings, reading sessions, and informal discussions, ways of thinking together beyond the desk. It's a real and often structured part of the week.
How to Apply
