Project Manager
Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead cross-functional programs involving
superconducting materials, magnet systems, and cryogenic technologies. The ideal candidate will
drive projects from concept through prototyping, testing, and deployment — coordinating tightly
with materials science, cryogenics, electrical engineering, and quality teams to deliver
superconducting magnets, wire/tape, or systems on time, within budget, and to performance specifications.
Key Responsibilities
• Own end-to-end planning and execution of superconductor programs, including magnet/coil
development, wire and tape production, cryostat integration, and system-level testing.
• Develop and maintain integrated project schedules, critical path analysis, and resource plans.
• Coordinate with R&D, process, and reliability engineering teams to track technical milestones
such as material qualification, coil winding, cooldown/quench testing, and field-performance
validation.
• Manage project budgets, capital expenditure (CapEx) tracking, and vendor/tooling procurement
timelines in partnership with finance and procurement, including specialty cryogenic equipment.
• Identify, track, and mitigate risks related to quench events, material performance, supply of rare materials and schedule slippage; escalate issues with clear recovery plans.
• Drive stakeholder communication through regular program reviews, status reports, and
executive dashboards (e.g., using Zoho, MS Project, Smartsheet, or Jira).
• Facilitate change control and cross-site/cross-lab coordination for multi-partner or multi-vendor
programs, including academic and national-lab collaborations where applicable.
• Partner with customers, research institutions, and/or component suppliers on program
timelines, qualification requirements, and delivery commitments.
• Lead post-project reviews and drive continuous improvement in project management processes,
tools, and templates.
Required Qualifications
• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering,
or related field.
• 3 - 7 years of project management experience in superconductor, cryogenics, advanced
materials, or related high-tech R&D manufacturing environments.
• Working understanding of superconducting materials (low-temperature and/or high-
temperature superconductors), magnet design, or cryogenic systems.
• Proven track record managing multi-disciplinary teams and complex, schedule-driven programs
with hard technical milestones.
• Proficiency with project management tools (Zoho, MS Project, Smartsheet, Jira, Primavera) and
engineering/ERP systems (SAP, Oracle).
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience presenting to
senior leadership, research partners, and customers.
• PMP, PgMP, or Six Sigma certification preferred.
Preferred Skills
• Familiarity with cryogenic infrastructure (helium liquefaction, cryocoolers, dilution refrigerators)
and associated safety protocols.
• Exposure to national laboratory, academic research, or government-funded (e.g., DOE, ITER)
program environments.
• Experience in a regulated or safety-critical environment involving pressure systems, high
magnetic fields, or cryogenic hazards.
