Bovine Genetics & Frozen Semen Laboratory
1. Position Overview
The Lab Technician – Bovine Genetics Laboratory will be working in bovine semen processing and cryopreservation operations at the Accuvance Genetics Research Centre. The job requires hands-on exposure and knowledge of laboratory protocols, quality control procedures, and production practices involved in the processing and preservation of frozen bovine semen used in genetic improvement programs. The Lab Technician will work under the supervision of laboratory scientists and technical staff and will carry out routine laboratory operations while adhering to strict biosecurity, safety, and quality assurance protocols.
2. Key Responsibilities
- Handling and preliminary evaluation of bull semen samples.
- Dilution, processing, and extender/media preparation.
- Printing, Filling, sealing, and labeling of straws using automated or semi-automated equipment.
- Controlled-rate freezing for cryopreservation of bovine semen in automated bio-freezers
- Packing, storage, and inventory management of frozen straws in liquid nitrogen containers.
- Operating the customized system and Sterilization/Fumigation etc as per SOPs
3. Quality Control & Laboratory Testing
- Performing routine quality control tests including post thaw motility assessment, microbial load, morphological examination and other QC tests
- Assist in documentation of test results and maintenance of laboratory records.
4. Laboratory Documentation & SOP Compliance
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and production protocols for all laboratory processes.
- Maintain accurate laboratory logbooks, sample records, and QC documentation.
- Maintain traceability of production batches and production records.
5. Biosecurity & Laboratory Hygiene
- Adhere to biosecurity guidelines applicable to animal genetics laboratories.
- Maintain cleanliness, sterilization protocols, and contamination control measures.
- Follow safe handling procedures for liquid nitrogen and cryogenic equipment.
6. Qualifications
- B.Sc. / Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) / Life Sciences / Veterinary Laboratory Technology or related field. Prior experience of working in semen station would be prefered.
- Good knowledge of laboratory practices and microscopy preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow laboratory procedures.
- Ability to work in a disciplined laboratory environment following SOPs.
8. Remuneration
Remuneration will not be a limiting factor for the right candidate. However, the typical compensation for a Lab Technician at Accuvance ranges between ₹2.5–3.5 lakhs per annum, depending on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and demonstrated capabilities.
9. Working Hours
Laboratory working hours shall normally be 8 a.m to 5 pm in winters and 6 a.m to 3 p.m. in summers depending upon the sample collection roster and as determined by the laboratory supervisor. However, a technician may be required to extend working hours during critical laboratory operations, semen processing schedules, technical visits or urgent timelines.
10. Reporting Structure
The Intern will report to the Laboratory Supervisor / Senior Scientist – Bovine Genetics Laboratory.
11. Performance Evaluation
The performance will be evaluated periodically based on:
- Adherence to laboratory SOPs and safety protocols
- Technical learning, skill acquisition, application and work proficiency
- Discipline, punctuality, and work ethic
- Quality of work, documentation and laboratory records
- Ability to work with laboratory staff and follow instructions
12. Code of Conduct
The Lab Technician is required to maintain professional conduct, confidentiality of laboratory data, and strict compliance with biosecurity and safety standards applicable to bovine semen stations and research laboratories.
