About Kalypso Designs
Kalypso Designs is an interior design firm known for delivering thoughtful, high-quality spaces across residential and commercial projects. As we scale, we are looking for a Senior Interior Designer/Architect to lead our design and project execution function, someone who can blend creative vision with operational rigor, and who is equally comfortable in a client meeting, a design review, or a site walkthrough.
Role Summary
The Senior Interior Designer/Architect will drive the design output, quality, and execution of projects at Kalypso Designs, working closely with the design leadership team. This is a senior role that combines creative direction, team leadership, client relationship management, vendor and site coordination, and business acumen. The ideal candidate has strong experience as a designer or architect and now thrives in leading teams, solving on-ground execution challenges, and ensuring every project is delivered on brief, on time, and on budget.
Key Responsibilities
1. Design Leadership & Quality Control
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of interior designers and architects across multiple concurrent projects.
- Review and approve design concepts, mood boards, layouts, 3D visualizations, and working drawings before client presentation.
- Set and maintain design quality standards, ensuring consistency in style, detailing, and finish across all projects.
- Guide the team on space planning, material selection, colour palettes, furniture layouts, and design detailing.
- Stay updated on design trends, materials, and techniques, and bring fresh ideas into studio practice.
2. Team Management
- Build, structure, and manage the design and architecture team, hiring, onboarding, training, and performance reviews.
- Allocate projects and manpower efficiently based on team strengths and project timelines.
- Foster a collaborative studio culture and mentor junior designers/architects to grow into senior roles.
- Conduct regular design reviews, brainstorming sessions, and skill-building workshops.
3. Client Coordination
- Act as the senior design point of contact for key clients, from briefing through to handover.
- Lead client presentations, design walkthroughs, and approval meetings with confidence and clarity.
- Understand client requirements, budgets, and expectations, and translate them into actionable design briefs for the team.
- Manage client communication proactively, handling escalations, change requests, and expectation-setting.
4. Vendor & Site Coordination
- Identify, evaluate, and onboard vendors, contractors, and fabricators for furniture, false ceiling, electrical, civil, and finishing work.
- Negotiate rates, timelines, and quality terms with vendors; maintain a reliable vendor database.
- Coordinate closely with site teams, project managers, and contractors to ensure design intent is executed correctly on-site.
- Conduct regular site visits to monitor execution quality, resolve on-site design issues, and ensure adherence to drawings and specifications.
- Troubleshoot on-ground execution challenges (material mismatches, site constraints, vendor delays) with practical solutions.
5. Material & Technical Knowledge
- Maintain strong, up-to-date knowledge of materials, laminates, veneers, stones, tiles, hardware, fabrics, lighting, and finishes, including cost implications and durability.
- Ensure technical accuracy of working drawings, sections, and details (AutoCAD proficiency essential).
- Review BOQs (Bill of Quantities) and material specifications for accuracy and cost-efficiency.
- Guide the team on detailing for execution, joinery details, finishes schedules, and services coordination.
6. Business & Commercial Acumen
- Own project profitability, track design hours, material costs, and vendor payments against budgets.
- Support leadership in pricing proposals, project costing, and scope definition for new business.
- Identify opportunities to improve studio processes, workflows, and turnaround times.
- Contribute to business development, client pitches, portfolio presentations, and studio positioning.
- Track project timelines and ensure on-time delivery, flagging risks to leadership early.
Requirements
Experience
- 8–12+ years of experience in interior design/architecture, with at least 3–4 years in a leadership or design-head capacity.
- Proven experience managing teams of designers and/or architects.
- Strong track record of end-to-end project delivery, from client briefing to site handover.
- Experience across residential, commercial, or hospitality projects.
Skills & Knowledge
- Excellent command of AutoCAD; working knowledge of SketchUp, 3ds Max, Photoshop, or similar visualization tools is a strong plus.
- Deep knowledge of materials, finishes, and construction detailing.
- Strong understanding of project costing, BOQs, and vendor negotiation.
- Excellent client-facing communication and presentation skills.
- Strong team leadership, mentoring, and people management skills.
- Working knowledge of business fundamentals, budgeting, P&L thinking, timelines, and resource planning.
- Ability to read and coordinate MEP, civil, and structural drawings in conjunction with design drawings.
Education
- Bachelor's/Master's degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or a related field.
Personal Attributes
- Strong ownership mindset, treats projects and the studio's reputation as their own.
- Calm under pressure, with strong problem-solving skills on-site and with clients.
- Detail-oriented but able to see the big picture on design intent and business goals.
- Collaborative leadership style that brings out the best in the team.
What Kalypso Designs Offers
- A leadership role with real ownership over design direction and studio growth.
- Collaborative, design-first studio culture.
- Opportunity to shape processes, team structure, and studio identity as the firm scales.
