Position: Satellite Communications Engineer
Location: Hyderabad, Telangana
Employment Type: Full-Time
Reports To: Lead – Avionics
Job Summary:
Cosmoserve is looking for a highly motivated and skilled Satellite Communications Engineer to design, develop, test, and support satellite communication systems. The engineer will be responsible for the end-to-end development of communication subsystems, modulation schemes, link budgets, and ground communication interfaces etc.
The role involves working closely with satellite systems, avionics, payload, RF, embedded hardware, and ground station teams to ensure reliable communication between the satellite and ground throughout the mission lifecycle.
Key Responsibilties:
Satellite Communication System Design
- Design and develop satellite communication architectures for TT&C (Telemetry, Tracking and Command) and payload data communication.
- Define communication system requirements based on mission objectives and satellite constraints.
- Perform end-to-end communication system analysis and optimization.
- Develop communication subsystem specifications, interface documents, and design documentation.
RF and Link Budget Analysis
- Perform RF link budget analysis for uplink and downlink communication.
- Analyze parameters including transmit power, antenna gain, path loss, atmospheric losses, receiver sensitivity, noise figure, and link margin.
- Support frequency planning and spectrum allocation activities.
- Evaluate communication performance under different orbital and environmental conditions.
Communication Hardware- Comms Module
- Support the selection and integration of RF components including:
o Transmitters and receivers
o Transceivers
o Power amplifiers
o Low Noise Amplifiers (LNA)
o Filters and duplexers
o RF switches
o Antennas and antenna deployment systems
- Work with PCB and RF engineers on schematic review, layout considerations, and RF hardware validation.
Modulation and Signal Processing
- Define and evaluate modulation, coding, and communication protocols.
- Work with communication standards such as CCSDS and other applicable satellite communication protocols.
- Analyze BER, Eb/N0, SNR, data rate, bandwidth, and spectral efficiency.
- Support implementation and testing of SDR-based communication systems where applicable.
Testing and Validation
- Develop communication subsystem test plans and procedures.
- Perform RF characterization and testing using equipment such as spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, signal generators, and RF power meters.
- Conduct end-to-end communication testing with satellite and ground station systems.
- Support environmental and functional testing of the communication subsystem.
- Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve communication anomalies during integration and testing.
Ground Segment and Mission Support
- Support the design and development of ground station communication interfaces.
- Participate in end-to-end satellite communication testing and mission simulations.
- Support satellite operations during commissioning and in-orbit operations.
- Analyze telemetry and communication performance and investigate anomalies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s / PHD degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering, RF/Microwave Engineering, Telecommunications, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of RF and wireless communication systems.
- Experience with satellite communication concepts and systems.
- Knowledge of modulation, coding, communication protocols, and link budget analysis.
- Understanding of antennas and RF propagation.
- Familiarity with RF test and measurement equipment.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with CubeSat or small satellite communication systems.
- Knowledge of CCSDS communication standards.
- Experience with VHF, UHF, S-band, X-band, or other satellite communication frequency bands.
- Experience with Software Defined Radio (SDR).
- Familiarity with RF simulation and analysis tools.
- Experience with MATLAB, Python, or similar tools for communication system analysis.
- Knowledge of ground station systems and satellite operations.
- Experience with RF PCB design and integration.
