About MIPL
Maharshi Industries Pvt. Ltd. is an Ahmedabad-based technology company working in Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, VR/MR Simulators, Embedded Systems, Special Purpose Machines, Industrial Automation, Defence Technologies, and Inspection Systems.
MIPL develops indigenous technology solutions for Defence Forces, Police, DRDO, Department of Atomic Energy, Railways, Oil & Gas PSUs, Government organizations, and industrial customers.
Our robotics portfolio includes unmanned ground vehicles, EOD robots, telescopic manipulators, inspection robots, underframe inspection systems, AI-enabled surveillance platforms, robotic mobility systems, and custom electromechanical machines.
Role Objective
The Robotics Design Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, validation, and improvement of robotic systems and electromechanical products.
The candidate should be capable of designing rugged, field-ready robotic platforms involving mobility systems, chassis, tracks/wheels, manipulators, lifting mechanisms, payload mounts, sensor integration, enclosures, drive systems, and manufacturable assemblies. Should be able to manage a team along with deadlines.
This role requires a hands-on engineer who can convert project requirements into practical designs, coordinate with manufacturing and electronics teams, solve field problems, and improve robot performance, reliability, serviceability, and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design complete robotic systems and mechanical subassemblies for UGVs, inspection robots, surveillance platforms, manipulators, automation systems and defence/industrial robotic products.
- Develop 3D models, manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, BOMs and design documentation using SolidWorks or equivalent CAD tools.
- Design and improve chassis, frames, enclosures, brackets, payload mounts, sensor mounts, drive systems, tracks, wheels, shafts, bearings, gearboxes, motor mounts and mechanical linkages.
- Work on tracked/wheeled mobility systems, including torque, load, traction, slope-climbing, stair-climbing, stability and weight-balance calculations.
- Design robotic arms, telescopic manipulators, grippers and payload-handling mechanisms, including actuator selection, joint loading, bending moment, reach and factor-of-safety calculations.
- Convert client/project requirements into practical mechanical concepts, prototypes and manufacturable designs.
- Coordinate with fabrication, machining, 3D printing, sheet metal, welding, assembly and vendor teams for prototype and production development.
- Perform engineering validation through basic calculations, FEA where required, physical testing, endurance trials and failure analysis.
- Work closely with electronics, embedded, AI, software and control teams for mounting and integration of motors, controllers, batteries, cameras, sensors, antennas, wiring harnesses and enclosures.
- Ensure designs are rugged, compact, lightweight, serviceable, cost-effective and suitable for field deployment.
- Support testing, FAT, field trials, client demonstrations, installation and commissioning.
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues such as track derailment, vibration, belt slip, structural failure, misalignment, overheating, wear, instability and poor field performance.
- Improve existing MIPL robotic products for reliability, manufacturability, cost, weight, maintainability and performance.
Desired Candidate Profile:-
The ideal candidate should be:
- A hands-on mechanical design engineer with strong practical understanding.
- Capable of designing from concept to manufacturing.
- Comfortable working on both new product development and field problem-solving.
- Strong in calculations, 3D design, BOM, drawings, and vendor coordination.
- Able to work with mechanical, electronics, embedded, AI, software, purchase, production, and project teams.
- Capable of leading junior design engineers.
- Willing to visit vendors, manufacturing sites, test sites, and client locations when required.
- Strong in ownership, follow-up, documentation, and problem-solving.
- Interested in building rugged indigenous robotic systems for defence, security, industrial, and government applications.
- Should have designed & built robots/ATVs during ROBOCON/Isro Robotics URSC/e-Yantra/BAJA/International Rover Challenge—IRC or similar.
