IP Camera Support Engineer

About the role
ClearQuote builds AI-powered vehicle damage inspection systems deployed at fleet and logistics depots across the UK, EU. Our application uses IP cameras feeding edge devices that run real-time computer-vision models.
We're hiring an engineer to own the configuration and maintain uptime of every camera we deploy to get the best possible images as required for our AI models. Your job starts the moment cameras are powered up and on the network: configure them correctly, maintain uptime, and fix them remotely when they drift.
This is a hands-on execution role for someone who knows Axis and Hikvision web UIs with a genuine understanding of photography and image quality principles.The core focus of this role is not general surveillance monitoring — it's getting the best possible still image out of a camera at the exact moment an event trigger fires (motion, line-crossing, intrusion, ANPR, etc.). This means knowing exactly which camera and system settings to adjust, and why, to produce sharp, well-exposed, well-timed captures under real-world lighting conditions.
What you'll do
• Plan camera requirements: based on site, vehicle types (dimensions), ML requirements, suggest camera configurations, spec/models, mounting arrangements etc
• Configure new cameras: once installers mount cameras and bring them online, configure each one end-to-end via the web UI or VAPIX/ISAPI — resolution, codec, bitrate, shutter speed, WDR, P-Iris, day/night mode, IR, white balance, NTP, ONVIF/RTSP, firmware, user accounts.
• Commission sites remotely: work over a call with the on-site installer to verify framing, adjust PTZ settings, confirm with ML team if images look right, and sign off the site as camera-ready.
• Own live camera health (L1/L2): monitor our camera fleet across all client sites. When a camera goes offline, drifts to black-and-white, loses focus, over/under-exposes, or starts dropping frames — diagnose it remotely, fix what you can via the web UI, and coordinate installer/maintenance team when a physical fix is needed. Setup alerts as required to monitor uptime and uploads
• Firmware & credentials management: keep firmware versions consistent across the fleet, rotate credentials, manage certificates, document every change.
• Documentation: maintain a per-site camera config record — model, firmware, IP plan, settings profile, last-verified date. Keep it current.
What this role is NOT
• Not a security guard or video monitoring role.
Must-have
• 2+ years hands-on experience configuring IP CCTV cameras — Axis, Hikvision, or both.
• Deep familiarity with camera web UIs — you can open any Axis or Hikvision camera and confidently set image, network, streaming and event settings without a manual.
• Solid understanding of IP networking fundamentals: subnets, static vs DHCP, RTSP, ONVIF, NTP, basic troubleshooting with ping / traceroute / telnet.
• Practical photography knowledge: understands the exposure triangle (shutter speed, aperture, ISO/gain), how each affects motion blur vs. noise vs. brightness, and how to balance them for a moving subject.
• Strong troubleshooting mindset — able to isolate whether a poor image is caused by exposure, focus, lighting, trigger timing, compression, or physical camera positioning.
• English communication, good enough to hop on a call with a UK/EU/US installer or client and walk them through what to check on-site.
• Open to working UK / EU business hours.
Nice to have
• Axis certifications (ACE / ACSE) or Hikvision certifications.
• Hands-on with VAPIX (Axis) or ISAPI (Hikvision) HTTP APIs
• Experience with ANPR/LPR cameras or facial-recognition-oriented capture setups, where image clarity has a functional (not just aesthetic) requirement.
• Familiarity with camera lens selection (focal length, aperture) and how field-of-view/distance affects achievable image detail.
• Experience configuring on-camera analytics (Axis Object Analytics, Hikvision AcuSense).
