Job Title: Head of Legal
Experience Level: 15-18+ Years Post Qualification Experience (PQE)
Industry: Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) / Insurance Broking

Job Summary / About the Role - The Head of Legal will serve as the principal legal advisor to the management and the board, overseeing all legal aspects of business operations. The primary goal is to ensure the company operates within the legal and regulatory framework, mitigate legal risks, and provide strategic legal guidance aligned with business objectives in the dynamic BFSI landscape.
Required Qualifications and Skills
Education: A bachelorโs degree in law (LLB) is mandatory; a masterโs degree in law, (LLM) is preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 15-18 years of post-qualification legal experience.
- Significant experience in a legal or compliance leadership role within the BFSI sector (Banking, NBFC, Fintech, Housing Finance, Insurance Broking) is essential.
- Proven track record in handling complex legal negotiations, documentation, and managing high-stakes litigation.
- Prior cross-border exposure/experience
Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of relevant laws, including the IRDA, SARFAESI Act, IBC, Company Law, and RBI/SEBI/IRDAI guidelines.
- Strong understanding of banking operations, lending laws, credit structuring, and recovery processes.
Skills:
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- High ethical standards and professional integrity.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Legal Counsel: Provide expert, strategic, and timely legal advice to senior management and various business units on a wide range of complex legal matters, including investments, transactions, and risk management strategies.
- Regulatory Compliance Oversight: Ensure adherence to all regulatory requirements and guidelines issued by bodies such as the IRDA , RBI, SEBI, IRDAI, and other applicable statutes. This includes monitoring changes in legislation and implementing necessary internal policy updates.
- Litigation and Dispute Management: Oversee and manage all legal disputes, litigation, arbitration, and recovery proceedings (e.g., under the SARFAESI Act, IBC, and N.I. Act) filed by and against the company. Manage the empanelment and performance of external legal counsel effectively.
- Contract Management and Documentation: Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of complex contracts, agreements, loan documents, MoUs, service contracts, and other legal instruments to safeguard the company's interests.
- Risk Management: Identify potential legal and regulatory risks, develop proactive mitigation strategies, and implement robust compliance programs.
- Team Leadership and Development: Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing in-house legal team, fostering a culture of compliance and ethical conduct.
- Corporate Governance: Advise on corporate governance matters and ensure the company's practices align with legal standards.
- Liaison with Stakeholders: Act as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies for timely filings and responses to notices, and collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g., Credit, Recovery, HR, Finance) to ensure alignment with legal policies.
