Job details:
SANPAR Defence Systems is seeking a General Manager – Technical to lead the design, engineering, and new product development (NPD) function for its thermal engineering product range. The company's core competence lies in refrigeration-based compressed air dryers, refrigeration-based air and water chillers/coolers, industrial dehumidification systems, and precision air conditioning — all engineered to AS 9100D, DGAQA, and CEMILAC standards for defence and aerospace applications. The role calls for a strong technical leader with deep fundamentals in the refrigeration cycle and refrigeration components, capable of guiding a team of 10 Design and Application Engineers, driving innovation, and translating customer requirements into robust, manufacturable, and certifiable product designs.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Product Leadership
● Own the technical design and performance of the company's refrigeration-based product portfolio: compressed air dryers, air and water chillers/coolers, dehumidification systems, and precision air conditioning units.
● Apply strong fundamentals of the refrigeration cycle (compression, condensation, expansion, evaporation) and refrigeration components (compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion devices, refrigerant controls) to guide design decisions and troubleshoot field/performance issues.
● Review and approve thermal design calculations, selection of refrigeration components, heat load calculations, and system sizing for new and existing products.
● Provide technical direction on refrigerant selection, energy efficiency, and compliance with applicable safety and environmental (F-gas/ODP) norms.
Innovation & New Product Development (NPD)
● Drive the NPD roadmap for thermal engineering products, from concept and feasibility through prototyping, testing, and production release.
● Champion innovation initiatives to improve product efficiency, footprint, reliability, and cost, keeping SANPAR competitive in defence and aerospace thermal management segments.
● Lead design reviews (conceptual, preliminary, and critical design reviews) and ensure design-for-manufacturability, design-for-reliability, and design-for-testability principles are applied.
● Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies relevant to the product range, including adsorption-based drying principles and precision air conditioning system design, where applicable.
Team Leadership & People Management
● Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 10 Design and Application Engineers, setting technical direction, allocating project workload, and building design capability within the team.
● Establish and monitor individual and team performance metrics, conduct technical reviews, and support career development and skill-building within the design function.
● Foster a culture of engineering rigor, documentation discipline, and continuous improvement across the design and application engineering team.
Quality, Compliance & Documentation
● Ensure all designs and documentation comply with AS 9100D quality management requirements and DGAQA/CEMILAC certification norms applicable to defence and aerospace hardware.
● Oversee design documentation, drawings, BOMs, and part numbering in line with SOP-ENG-001 and related engineering SOPs.
● Support internal and customer/regulatory audits with technical documentation, design validation records, and qualification test data.
● Drive root-cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) for field failures or design-related non-conformances.
Cross-Functional Coordination
● Work closely with Sales and Applications teams to translate customer requirements into technical specifications and proposals.
● Coordinate with Production and Quality functions to ensure smooth transfer of new designs into manufacturing, with minimal rework or design-related deviations.
● Liaise with Procurement on sourcing of refrigeration components, compressors, and specialised materials to meet technical and certification requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
● B.E./B.Tech or M.E./M.Tech in Thermal Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (Refrigeration & Air Conditioning specialisation preferred), or equivalent (mandatory).
● 10–15 years of relevant professional experience in thermal/refrigeration product design, with a track record of leading design and application engineering teams.
● Demonstrated experience in refrigeration-based compressed air dryers, chillers, coolers, or precision air conditioning systems is highly desirable.
● Added advantage: understanding of mass transfer principles in adsorption-based compressed air dryers, and precision air conditioning system design.
● Experience in a regulated manufacturing environment (AS 9100D / DGAQA / CEMILAC, or equivalent defence/aerospace quality systems) is strongly preferred.
Key Skills & Competencies
● Strong fundamentals of the refrigeration cycle, refrigerant properties, and refrigeration/HVAC component selection.
● Working knowledge of mass transfer principles as applied to adsorption-based drying and desiccant systems (added advantage).
● Proven capability in leading and mentoring a multi-disciplinary design and application engineering team.
● Strong innovation orientation with hands-on experience driving NPD from concept to production.
● Proficiency in thermal design/simulation tools, CAD systems (e.g., SolidWorks), and engineering documentation practices.
● Strong analytical, problem-solving, and cross-functional communication skills.
