Position Overview
The Data Centre Design Manager leads the planning, design, and delivery of mission-critical data centre infrastructure projects. This role requires deep technical expertise in data centre systems, strong project management capabilities, and the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver world-class facilities that meet stringent reliability, efficiency, and scalability requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership & Technical Direction Oversee all aspects of data centre design from concept through construction documentation, ensuring compliance with industry standards (Uptime Institute, TIA-942, ASHRAE) and client-specific requirements. Lead design reviews and provide technical guidance on mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and architectural systems critical to data centre operations.
Project Management Manage design schedules, budgets, and resources across multiple concurrent projects. Coordinate internal teams and external consultants including MEP engineers, architects, structural engineers, and specialty contractors. Ensure deliverables meet quality standards and project milestones.
Stakeholder Coordination Serve as primary technical liaison between clients, design teams, contractors, and internal stakeholders. Translate business requirements into technical specifications. Present design concepts and progress updates to senior leadership and client executives.
Standards & Best Practices Establish and maintain design standards, templates, and technical guidelines. Stay current with emerging technologies, energy efficiency innovations, and evolving industry regulations. Implement lessons learned from previous projects to continuously improve design quality.
Risk Management Identify and mitigate design risks related to capacity, redundancy, cooling efficiency, power distribution, and operational resilience. Conduct design failure mode analysis and develop contingency strategies.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline. Minimum 8-10 years of experience in data centre design, construction, or operations, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role.
Technical Expertise Deep understanding of data centre infrastructure including UPS systems, generators, PDUs, CRAC/CRAH units, hot/cold aisle containment, fire suppression systems, building management systems (BMS), and structured cabling. Proficiency in power and cooling capacity planning, load calculations, and redundancy modeling (N, N+1, 2N configurations).
Software & Tools Experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit), computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling tools, data centre infrastructure management (DCIM) platforms, and project management software.
Certifications Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred. Relevant certifications such as Uptime Institute Accredited Tier Designer (ATD), LEED AP, or Certified Data Centre Design Professional (CDCDP) highly valued.
Key Competencies
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Excellent communication and presentation skills with ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences. Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver results under tight deadlines. Leadership experience managing cross-functional teams and external partners.
