Senior Network Engineer & Junior Network Administrator
Service Overview
The proposed Network Management Service will provide dedicated network engineering and administration support for the client’s enterprise and operational technology (OT) environment.
The service will consist of two dedicated resources:
- Senior Network Engineer – responsible for network architecture, solution design, planning, high-level administration, technical leadership and complex troubleshooting.
- Junior Network Administrator – responsible for day-to-day network administration, device patching, basic configurations, monitoring and Tier 1–2 support.
The service model is intended to operate similarly to the existing Systems Administration service, with defined responsibilities, service coverage and billing under a managed services agreement.
1. Senior Network Engineer
Role Purpose
The Senior Network Engineer will provide technical leadership for the client's network environment, supporting architecture, design, implementation, administration, optimization and troubleshooting of enterprise and OT networking infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Network Architecture & Design
- Architect and design scalable, secure and resilient network solutions.
- Develop network designs based on business, application and operational requirements.
- Plan network infrastructure upgrades, expansions and technology transitions.
- Review existing network architecture and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Develop network diagrams, standards, configurations and technical documentation.
- Provide technical recommendations for network capacity, performance, availability and security.
Network Administration
- Perform high-level administration of enterprise network infrastructure.
- Manage and maintain:
- Palo Alto firewalls
- Cisco Meraki switching and wireless infrastructure
- Aruba EdgeConnect SD-WAN (formerly Silver Peak)
- Network routing, switching, wireless and related infrastructure.
- Manage network policies, access controls, VLANs, routing and segmentation.
- Review and maintain firewall and network security policies in coordination with security requirements.
- Support SD-WAN configuration, connectivity and performance management.
- Conduct configuration reviews and network health assessments.
OT / Network Segmentation
- Support networking requirements within the organization's operational technology/shop-floor environment.
- Design and maintain appropriate network segmentation between IT and OT environments.
- Support VLANs, firewall policies, access controls and other controls required for secure OT connectivity.
- Work with operational teams to understand connectivity requirements while maintaining appropriate security boundaries.
- Support troubleshooting of network-related OT connectivity issues.
Engineering & Project Support
- Lead or support network-related projects and infrastructure changes.
- Evaluate proposed technologies and solutions.
- Participate in solution planning, technical reviews and implementation activities.
- Develop implementation and rollback plans for significant network changes.
- Coordinate with vendors and technology partners when required.
- Support network migrations, upgrades and infrastructure refreshes.
Troubleshooting & Escalation
- Provide Tier 2–3 technical support for complex network incidents.
- Diagnose network performance, connectivity, routing, switching, wireless, firewall and SD-WAN issues.
- Perform root-cause analysis for recurring or complex incidents.
- Provide technical escalation support to the Junior Network Administrator.
- Coordinate with other IT teams where incidents span networking, systems, security or applications.
Monitoring & Optimization
- Review network performance, availability and capacity.
- Identify potential issues before they impact business operations.
- Recommend improvements to network resilience, performance and security.
- Review monitoring and alerting requirements and ensure appropriate escalation processes are followed.
Documentation & Governance
- Maintain accurate network documentation and diagrams.
- Maintain configuration standards and operational procedures.
- Document significant changes and technical decisions.
- Support network asset and configuration management.
- Contribute to service reporting, operational reviews and continuous improvement activities.
Experience / Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Networking, Information Technology or a related field.
- Strong experience in enterprise network engineering and administration.
- Experience with firewall, switching, wireless and SD-WAN technologies.
- Hands-on experience with Palo Alto, Cisco Meraki and Aruba EdgeConnect/Silver Peak environments preferred.
- Experience with network segmentation and security principles.
- Experience supporting IT/OT or industrial environments is highly desirable.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Ability to design, document and communicate technical solutions.
- Relevant certifications such as CCNA/CCNP, PCNSE, Aruba, Meraki or equivalent are desirable.
2. Junior Network Administrator
Role Purpose
The Junior Network Administrator will provide day-to-day operational support for the network environment, focusing on monitoring, network device maintenance, patching, basic configuration and Tier 1–2 incident support.
Key Responsibilities
Network Operations
- Monitor network infrastructure and respond to alerts.
- Perform routine network administration activities.
- Support day-to-day operation of switches, wireless infrastructure, firewalls and SD-WAN devices.
- Perform basic troubleshooting of connectivity issues.
- Escalate complex issues to the Senior Network Engineer.
Network Device Patching & Maintenance
- Coordinate and perform network device firmware/software patching under approved procedures.
- Maintain patching schedules and records.
- Validate device health following upgrades or maintenance.
- Support planned maintenance windows and change activities.
- Ensure configurations are backed up before approved changes.
Basic Configuration
- Perform routine configuration changes under established standards and procedures.
- Support:
- VLAN configuration
- Switch port configuration
- Basic wireless configuration
- Device onboarding
- Basic firewall changes
- Network access changes
- Basic SD-WAN operational tasks
- Follow approved change-management processes.
Tier 1–2 Support
- Provide first-line and second-line network support.
- Troubleshoot basic:
- Connectivity problems
- Switch port issues
- Wireless connectivity
- Device reachability
- VLAN/access issues
- Basic firewall connectivity issues
- Gather relevant logs and troubleshooting information before escalation.
- Track incidents through the appropriate ticketing system.
- Escalate unresolved or complex issues to the Senior Network Engineer.
Network Monitoring & Documentation
- Monitor network availability and alerts.
- Maintain network device inventory and operational records.
- Update network documentation following approved changes.
- Maintain patching and maintenance records.
- Follow standard operating procedures and network support runbooks.
OT Support
- Provide operational support for approved network activities within the shop-floor/OT environment.
- Assist with network segmentation-related operational tasks under Senior Engineer direction.
- Follow established OT change-control and security procedures.
- Escalate OT connectivity or security issues that require engineering intervention.
Experience / Qualifications
- Degree, diploma or equivalent qualification in Networking, Information Technology or related field.
- Basic understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing and switching.
- Familiarity with enterprise network infrastructure.
- Basic understanding of wireless networking and network security.
- Exposure to Cisco Meraki, Palo Alto or Aruba EdgeConnect is desirable.
- Basic troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Ability to follow documented procedures and change-management processes.
- Entry-level networking certification such as CCNA or equivalent is desirable.

Shared Service Responsibilities
Both resources will work as an integrated Network Management team and will be expected to:
- Follow the client's IT policies, security standards and change-management processes.
- Maintain appropriate documentation for network infrastructure.
- Support incident, problem and change management.
- Participate in scheduled maintenance activities.
- Maintain confidentiality and security of client infrastructure.
- Collaborate with Systems Administration, Cybersecurity, Application and OT teams.
- Participate in knowledge transfer and cross-training.
- Maintain clear records of activities, incidents and changes.
- Support continuous improvement of network operations.
