The Position
Role Overview
The Senior Automation QA Engineer is a hands-on implementation quality engineering role responsible for defining, automating, executing and governing testing across customer implementations. The role is based in India and reports to the Implementation Lead.
The successful candidate will combine strong automation engineering skills with practical ownership of system integration testing, end-to-end regression, API validation, release readiness and defect management. The role works closely with customer QA and business teams, Senior Automation QA Engineers, backend engineers, Product Engineering, Platform/DevOps and Service Management to ensure implemented healthcare solutions are reliable, traceable to agreed requirements and ready for controlled production release.
Responsibilities
1) Implementation Test Strategy and Planning
- Own the implementation test approach for assigned customer workstreams, covering functional testing, system integration testing, end-to-end testing, regression, sanity and release verification.
- Review business requirements, functional specifications, user stories, acceptance criteria, API mappings and solution designs to identify test scope, dependencies and quality risks.
- Create test plans, test scenarios, traceability, entry and exit criteria, test-data needs, schedules and evidence requirements aligned with implementation milestones.
- Distinguish functional acceptance testing from regression, performance and security testing, and ensure each activity has clear objectives and ownership.
- Raise test-environment, data, configuration and dependency risks early and provide clear recommendations to the Implementation Lead.
2) Test Automation Framework and Engineering
- Design, enhance and maintain reusable automation frameworks for web, API and end-to-end implementation testing.
- Develop automated tests using Java or JavaScript/TypeScript with tools such as Selenium, Playwright or Cypress, TestNG or JUnit, Cucumber and REST Assured.
- Build stable, maintainable automation using page-object or equivalent design patterns, reusable test utilities, externalised test data and clear reporting.
- Integrate automated suites with Git and CI/CD pipelines such as Azure DevOps or Jenkins for repeatable execution and regression feedback.
- Analyse flaky tests, environment-related failures and framework defects, and implement sustainable corrections rather than repeated manual workarounds.
3) API, FHIR and Integration Testing
- Design and execute API tests using Postman, REST Assured or equivalent tools, validating status codes, schemas, payloads, mappings, authentication, error handling and response behaviour.
- Validate end-to-end claims and pre-authorisation flows across customer systems, FHIR gateways, data-enrichment services, integration layers and Core Claims.
- Validate HL7 FHIR request and response structures, required fields, business validations and mappings to internal claim models.
- Use SQL and database queries to verify processing results, configuration, audit records and downstream persistence where authorised.
- Test positive, negative, boundary, invalid-data, retry and failure-recovery scenarios across connected systems.
4) Functional, SIT and End-to-End Regression Testing
- Execute and coordinate functional, SIT, regression, sanity and end-to-end scenarios across agreed implementation scope.
- Validate claims outcomes, benefit matching, calculations, rules, tariffs, reason codes, status transitions, user interfaces and downstream responses against documented expectations.
- Prepare representative test data that covers valid, invalid, conflicting and boundary conditions while complying with applicable data-handling requirements.
- Re-test resolved defects and assess regression impact across related workflows before recommending release readiness.
- Maintain clear execution evidence and status reporting for customer and internal review.
5) Defect Triage and Root-Cause Support
- Log defects with reproducible steps, input data, expected and actual results, logs, screenshots and supporting evidence.
- Lead or support structured defect triage with customer QA, business analysts, developers and product teams.
- Differentiate code defects from configuration, test-data, environment, integration or requirement issues and route them to the correct owner.
- Track defects through investigation, resolution, retesting and closure, and escalate critical blockers and ageing issues promptly.
- Use logs, API traces, database evidence and test results to support efficient root-cause analysis.
6) Release Readiness and Production Validation
- Define and execute pre-release regression, deployment sanity, smoke testing and post-deployment verification across sandbox, UAT, pre-production and production environments.
- Confirm that critical scenarios have passed, defects are appropriately resolved or accepted, and testing evidence is available before deployment approval.
- Coordinate with implementation engineers and Platform/DevOps teams on build versions, environment readiness, endpoints, test accounts and release dependencies.
- Support controlled go-live, hypercare and production incident validation, including reproduction and verification of corrective fixes.
- Prepare test completion summaries and clearly communicate residual risks, deferred items and recommended follow-up actions.
7) Performance, Security and Non-Functional Quality Support
- Contribute to non-functional test planning covering performance, resilience, security, compatibility and operational supportability.
- Create or maintain performance test scripts using JMeter or equivalent tools where required, and support analysis of response-time, throughput and stability results.
- Validate authentication, authorisation, session handling, input validation and other agreed security controls within functional and API testing scope.
- Support vulnerability-remediation verification and confirm fixes do not introduce functional regression.
- Work with engineering and platform teams to verify logging, monitoring and diagnostic information needed for production support.
8) QA Leadership, Governance and Continuous Improvement
- Act as the quality focal point for assigned implementation projects and provide structured updates to the Implementation Lead.
- Mentor QA engineers and customer testers in test design, automation practices, defect reporting and evidence quality.
- Maintain implementation QA assets in Jira, Xray or equivalent test-management tools, Confluence and source-control repositories.
- Establish reusable regression packs, test-data patterns, checklists and reporting templates across customer implementations.
- Promote risk-based testing, automation-first regression and continuous improvement while ensuring critical business flows receive appropriate manual exploratory testing.
Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline.
- Minimum 7 years of software testing experience, including substantial hands-on automation testing and responsibility for complex enterprise implementations.
- Strong experience designing and maintaining automation frameworks for web and API testing.
- Hands-on experience with Selenium and at least one modern automation tool such as Playwright or Cypress.
- Proficiency in Java or JavaScript/TypeScript and experience with TestNG, JUnit, Cucumber or equivalent frameworks.
- Strong API-testing experience using Postman, REST Assured or equivalent tools, including JSON validation and negative testing.
- Good SQL skills for data preparation, backend validation and defect investigation.
- Experience integrating automated tests with Git and CI/CD pipelines such as Azure DevOps or Jenkins.
- Experience with Jira and test-management tools such as Xray, Zephyr or equivalent.
- Practical experience across functional testing, SIT, UAT support, end-to-end regression, sanity, smoke and production verification.
- Experience with performance testing using JMeter or equivalent tools is strongly preferred.
- Experience testing cloud-hosted applications or services deployed on Microsoft Azure, Docker or Kubernetes is advantageous.
- Experience in health insurance, claims processing, benefit configuration, pre-authorisation or healthcare technology is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with HL7 FHIR, healthcare APIs and claims request/response validation is strongly preferred.
- ISTQB or an equivalent testing certification is advantageous.
- Excellent written and spoken English, with the confidence to coordinate directly with customer business and QA teams.
- Ability to work independently, lead test activities, mentor colleagues and collaborate across distributed teams and time zones.
- Ability to work effectively from India with a reporting line to the Implementation Lead; occasional regional travel or after-hours release support may be required.
What You Will Gain in This Role
- End-to-end ownership of quality engineering across complex healthcare customer implementations.
- Opportunity to shape reusable test automation, regression and release-readiness practices across multiple Asian markets.
- Exposure to claims processing, benefit configuration, FHIR integration, cloud environments and production-quality governance.
- A pathway to broader QA leadership through implementation ownership, customer coordination and mentoring.
