About Job Role
We are seeking a hands-on Senior Firmware Design Engineer with 7-10 years of experience to develop, enhance, migrate, sustain, and release embedded firmware for Potter's fire and life-safety portfolio. The role supports new product development, product extensions, platform modernisation, value engineering, component obsolescence, compliance, and field or production support. The engineer will own assigned firmware work packages, define maintainable architectures, develop reusable platform software and product features, and ensure deterministic behaviour on target hardware. Assignments may include microcontroller or toolchain migration, protocol development, diagnostics, hardware integration, verification, and issue resolution across multiple product families.
Key Responsibilities
Firmware Architecture and Product Development
- • Own firmware work packages for new products, product enhancements, redesigns, sustenance, and value-engineering initiatives.
- • Analyse system and software requirements, hardware interfaces, existing code, field behaviour, regulatory constraints, and manufacturing needs before defining the implementation approach.
- • Define and implement modular architectures covering startup, BSP, HAL, drivers, protocols, application logic, diagnostics, configuration, and production-test support.
- • Develop production embedded software in C for bare-metal or RTOS-based systems, with appropriate use of interrupts, timers, state machines, memory, and communication peripherals.
- • Plan and execute microcontroller, compiler, IDE, or hardware-platform migrations when required, including build, linker, startup, timing, peripheral, and compatibility changes.
- • Create reusable software components and controlled product configurations that reduce duplication and simplify maintenance across product families.
Real Time Control Interfaces and Diagnostics
- • Implement deterministic control, supervision, communication, indication, relay, power-state, and fault-handling behaviour appropriate to the product.
- • Design safe responses for reset, brownout, watchdog, communication loss, open or short circuits, power transitions, and invalid configuration conditions.
- • Develop or maintain wired and proprietary communication protocols, diagnostics, logging, calibration, and service functions while preserving required compatibility.
- • Manage flash, RAM, stack, CPU loading, timing, and recovery margins and document relevant design limits.
Software Quality Verification and Compliance
- • Convert system, hardware, regulatory, and product requirements into software requirements, design descriptions, test cases, and traceability.
- • Develop unit, integration, hardware-in-the-loop, fault-injection, protocol, timing, and regression tests, including reusable test utilities and automation where practical.
- • Apply coding standards, peer review, static analysis, version control, defect tracking, root-cause analysis, and controlled change practices; apply MISRA C principles where appropriate.
- • Perform board bring-up and signal-level debugging with hardware engineers using debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analysers, serial tools, and protocol analysers.
- • Support UL, FM, FCC, and other required compliance or certification testing with controlled test firmware, issue reproduction, corrective action, documented evidence, and retest closure.
Product Lifecycle Release and Technical Leadership
- • Assess firmware impact from value-engineering changes, alternate components, hardware revisions, and component obsolescence; update drivers, calibration, timing, and configuration as required.
- • Release reproducible firmware packages containing source, project files, configuration, binaries, maps, checksums, release notes, test evidence, and traceability.
- • Support production programming, ICT or FCT, pilot builds, phase-in, sustaining issues, and structured investigation of field problems.
- • Review junior engineers' work, identify dependencies and risks early, and communicate design decisions and verification status in technical reviews.
Qualifications
- • 7-10 years of hands-on embedded firmware-development experience, including responsibility for implementation, integration, debugging, verification, and production release.
- • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related discipline.
- • Strong Embedded C skills and practical experience with bare-metal or RTOS-based systems, interrupts, timers, state machines, memory constraints, and deterministic real-time behaviour.
- • Demonstrated experience designing or maintaining modular BSP, HAL, driver, protocol, application, diagnostic, or boot and update layers for production embedded products.
- • Experience migrating firmware between microcontroller families, compilers, IDEs, or hardware revisions and resolving architecture, linker, startup, timing, and peripheral differences.
- • Hands-on debugging with embedded toolchains, JTAG or SWD probes, oscilloscopes, logic analysers, serial tools, and protocol analysers.
- • Working knowledge of version control, code review, static analysis, defect tracking, configuration management, unit testing, integration testing, and regression testing.
Preferred Experience
- • Prior firmware-development experience in fire alarm, fire and life-safety, emergency communication, building-automation, or another regulated product industry is strongly preferred.
- • Hands-on participation in UL and FCC compliance or certification programs is strongly preferred; experience supporting UL 864 or FM Approvals is valuable.
- • Experience with Renesas or comparable microcontrollers, IAR or similar toolchains, processor migration, or legacy-code modernisation is preferred.
- • Experience with fire-alarm communication loops, notification circuits, RS-485 or proprietary networks, supervised field circuits, annunciation, relay control, or networked power products is advantageous.
