Role Description
A Network Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, security, and optimization of the organization's network infrastructure. The role requires strong hands-on experience in enterprise networking, network security, troubleshooting, monitoring, and infrastructure planning to ensure reliable and secure connectivity across the organization.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
1. Network Infrastructure Management
- Design, implement, and maintain LAN, WAN, WLAN, VPN, and other network infrastructure across the organization.
- Configure and manage routers, switches, firewalls, wireless controllers, access points, and related network devices.
- Manage routing, switching, VLANs, IP addressing, subnetting, and network connectivity.
- Plan and implement network upgrades, expansions, and infrastructure changes based on business requirements.
- Ensure network infrastructure meets requirements for availability, scalability, performance, and security.
2. Network Security and Monitoring
- Configure and manage firewalls, VPNs, network access controls, and security policies.
- Implement network segmentation, VLAN security, and secure remote access solutions.
- Monitor network availability, performance, bandwidth utilization, latency, and connectivity using appropriate monitoring tools.
- Coordinate with the Information Security team on network security incidents and vulnerabilities.
- Ensure network configurations and security controls follow organizational standards.
3. Troubleshooting and Technical Support
- Diagnose and resolve complex issues related to routing, switching, wireless, VPN, firewall, internet, and LAN/WAN connectivity.
- Perform root cause analysis for recurring network issues and implement corrective actions.
- Provide technical support for network-related issues across departments and campuses.
- Coordinate with IT Operations, System Administration, Information Security, and other technical teams to resolve cross-functional issues.
- Coordinate with ISPs and vendors for network-related incidents and service restoration.
4. Network Maintenance and Documentation
- Perform regular maintenance, configuration reviews, firmware upgrades, and patching of network devices.
- Maintain configuration backups and support network recovery during infrastructure failures.
- Maintain updated network diagrams, IP addressing schemes, VLAN details, device inventory, firewall configurations, and technical documentation.
- Document network changes, implementations, configurations, and troubleshooting activities.
5. Infrastructure Planning and Vendor Coordination
- Analyze network performance and utilization to identify capacity and upgrade requirements.
- Participate in network architecture, infrastructure planning, and technology evaluation.
- Prepare technical requirements, specifications, and BOQs for network infrastructure projects.
- Coordinate with ISPs, OEMs, network vendors, and service providers for implementation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Review technical proposals, network architecture diagrams, and deployment plans submitted by vendors.
- Lead or participate in network implementation, migration, and upgrade projects.
Required Skills and Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in Network Engineering, Network Administration, or Enterprise Network Infrastructure.
- Strong experience in LAN, WAN, VLAN, WLAN, routing, switching, VPN, and firewall technologies.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NAT, IPv4/IPv6, subnetting, and network protocols.
- Hands-on experience in configuring and troubleshooting routers, switches, firewalls, wireless infrastructure, and VPN solutions.
- Experience with network monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
- Strong understanding of network security, access control, and network segmentation.
- Experience working with ISPs, OEMs, vendors, and managed service providers.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and root-cause analysis skills.
- Experience managing network infrastructure across multiple locations/campuses.
- Good technical documentation, communication, and coordination skills.
