Job Description – Manager, Accounts

Role Purpose
The Manager – Accounts will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity and timely closure of the Company’s books of accounts and financial statements. The incumbent will independently manage financial reporting, balance-sheet reviews, statutory and internal audits, regulatory compliance and auditor coordination.
This position requires a qualified Chartered Accountant with strong financial-statement expertise and substantial experience working directly with statutory auditors, internal auditors, tax auditors and reputed audit or Chartered Accountancy firms.
Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Accounting and Reporting
- Lead the monthly, quarterly and annual closure of books of accounts within defined timelines.
- Prepare, review and finalise the Balance Sheet, Statement of Profit and Loss, Cash Flow Statement, schedules, notes to accounts and supporting reconciliations.
- Ensure that financial statements are accurate, complete and compliant with applicable Accounting Standards/Ind AS, the Companies Act, 2013, and other statutory requirements.
- Review the general ledger, trial balance and major account balances to identify inaccuracies, unusual transactions or accounting gaps.
- Review journal entries, provisions, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, depreciation, inventory valuation, employee-related provisions and intercompany transactions.
- Ensure timely reconciliation of bank accounts, vendors, customers, statutory accounts, inventory, fixed assets and related-party balances.
- Support the preparation of management accounts, MIS reports, variance analyses and financial information required by senior management, the Board, investors and lenders.
Audit Management
- Plan and coordinate statutory audits, internal audits, tax audits and other financial or compliance audits.
- Act as the principal point of contact for statutory auditors, internal auditors, tax consultants and other external assurance agencies.
- Independently understand, respond to and resolve auditors’ queries with appropriate explanations and documentary evidence.
- Prepare and review audit schedules, account reconciliations, ledger extracts, confirmations, supporting documents and management representations.
- Ensure timely closure of audit observations, control deficiencies and information requirements.
- Evaluate audit findings, determine the underlying root causes and implement sustainable corrective and preventive actions.
- Maintain a comprehensive audit tracker covering information requests, observations, management responses, ownership and closure status.
- Coordinate with internal departments to obtain accurate and timely information required for audit completion.
- Support financial and tax due diligence undertaken by investors, lenders or other external stakeholders.
Financial Controls and Governance
- Establish and strengthen internal financial controls, accounting policies, standard operating procedures and maker-checker mechanisms.
- Conduct periodic balance-sheet reviews and ensure that all balances are adequately supported, reconciled and recoverable.
- Monitor high-risk areas such as revenue recognition, inventory, capex, vendor payments, expense provisioning, statutory liabilities and related-party transactions.
- Ensure proper maintenance of books, vouchers, supporting documentation and audit trails.
- Identify accounting, control and compliance risks and recommend practical risk-mitigation measures.
- Support the implementation and testing of Internal Financial Controls over Financial Reporting.
- Ensure that accounting and approval processes comply with the Company’s delegation-of-authority framework.
Statutory and Tax Compliance
- Ensure timely and accurate compliance with GST, TDS, income tax and other applicable financial and tax regulations.
- Review statutory returns, reconciliations, tax computations and payments before submission.
- Coordinate with tax advisors and authorities for assessments, notices, queries and reconciliations.
- Monitor changes in accounting, taxation and corporate-law requirements and assess their impact on the Company.
- Ensure that statutory liabilities are accurately recorded, reconciled and deposited within prescribed timelines.
Business and Cross-Functional Support
- Collaborate with Procurement, Commercial, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, HR, Legal and other functions to resolve accounting and audit-related matters.
- Review accounting implications of contracts, business arrangements, capex proposals and commercial transactions.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, working-capital monitoring and cost-control initiatives.
- Provide reliable financial information and analytical inputs for management decision-making.
- Guide and supervise the accounts team, review their work and build stronger accounting and audit readiness across the function.
Qualification and Experience
- Qualified Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India – mandatory.
- Five to seven years of relevant post-qualification experience in accounting, financial reporting and audits.
- At least two to three years of substantive experience working with a reputed audit/Chartered Accountancy firm or directly managing audit engagements with external audit agencies – mandatory.
- Demonstrated experience in preparing, reviewing and finalising Balance Sheets, Statements of Profit and Loss, Cash Flow Statements, schedules and notes to accounts.
- Strong experience in independently addressing statutory and internal auditors’ queries and providing appropriate financial explanations and evidence.
- Experience in a manufacturing, specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, FMCG or process-industry organisation will be strongly preferred.
- Exposure to investor due diligence, lender reporting or Board-level financial reporting will be an advantage.
- Candidates without substantial audit-facing and financial-statement finalisation experience will not be considered.
Technical Competencies
- Advanced knowledge of financial accounting, Accounting Standards/Ind AS and Schedule III requirements.
- Strong understanding of the Companies Act, GST, TDS, income tax and audit requirements.
- Expertise in ledger scrutiny, balance-sheet reconciliation, provisioning, revenue recognition, inventory accounting and fixed-asset accounting.
- Working knowledge of Internal Financial Controls, risk assessment and audit-observation closure.
- Strong proficiency in ERP/accounting systems and advanced Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to interpret complex financial data and convert it into clear, decision-useful information.
