This is an immediate requirement, and applications from candidates who can join within the required timeline will be given preference.
About iNSPIRE Design
iNSPIRE Design is a product development and engineering company based in Ahmedabad. We work with startups, established companies, research institutions, and healthcare professionals to develop new products from early-stage concepts through functional prototypes and manufacturing readiness.
Our projects primarily involve medical devices, electromechanical products, test fixtures, consumer products, automation systems, and custom engineering solutions. The work is highly varied and requires strong first-principles engineering, practical problem-solving, rapid prototyping, and close coordination with clients, vendors, and internal teams.
The Role
We are looking for a senior, hands-on mechanical engineer who can take technical ownership of complex product development projects.
This is not a role limited to CAD modelling or preparing drawings. The selected candidate will be expected to understand client requirements, develop product architectures, make engineering decisions, guide junior engineers and designers, resolve prototype failures, and lead projects through design, testing, iteration, and manufacturing handover.
The person should be capable of operating independently and gradually taking ownership of the day-to-
day engineering function within the company.
Key Responsibilities
Product Development and Engineering
- Lead mechanical product development projects from initial requirements through functional prototype and manufacturing readiness.
- Convert incomplete or evolving client requirements into clear engineering specifications and development plans.
- Develop product architecture, mechanisms, assemblies, enclosures, structural components, and electromechanical integration concepts.
- Perform engineering calculations related to loads, stresses, fits, tolerances, motion, thermal behaviour, material selection, and manufacturing feasibility.
- Identify technical risks early and develop practical methods to test and reduce those risks.
- Review existing designs critically and recommend improvements based on performance, reliability, cost, usability, and manufacturability.
- Troubleshoot prototype failures and lead structured root-cause analysis and corrective action.
Design and Documentation
- Create and review detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and engineering documentation.
- Apply appropriate GD&T, tolerance stack-up, fits, clearances, fastener selection, and assembly considerations.
- Maintain proper revision control, design records, BOMs, technical specifications, and project documentation.
- Ensure designs are suitable for prototyping as well as eventual production.
- Conduct design reviews and approve engineering outputs before release.
Prototyping and Testing
- Plan and supervise the fabrication and assembly of proof-of-concept and functional prototypes.
- Select suitable prototyping methods, including 3D printing, CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, laser cutting, casting, and off-the-shelf component integration.
- Develop test plans, fixtures, acceptance criteria, and validation methods.
- Personally participate in prototype assembly, testing, debugging, and design iteration where required.
- Make sound engineering decisions even when complete data or ideal resources are unavailable.
Manufacturing and Vendor Coordination
- Work directly with machine shops, fabricators, moulders, component suppliers, and contract manufacturers.
- Review vendor quotations, manufacturing processes, tolerances, material specifications, and technical capabilities.
- Resolve manufacturing and assembly issues without compromising critical product requirements.
- Support design for manufacturing, design for assembly, cost reduction, and production handover activities.
- Evaluate whether components should be custom-developed, modified, or sourced as standard parts.
Technical Leadership
- Guide and review the work of mechanical engineers, industrial designers, interns, and prototyping staff.
- Break larger projects into clearly defined engineering tasks and assign them effectively.
- Establish practical design standards, review processes, calculation practices, and documentation systems.
- Coach junior team members while maintaining accountability for timelines and quality.
- Raise the overall technical capability and engineering discipline of the organisation.
- Take responsibility for technical decisions rather than depending on constant direction from the founder.
Project and Client Ownership
- Participate in client discussions to understand technical requirements, constraints, and priorities.
- Explain engineering decisions, risks, limitations, and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Prepare realistic project plans, resource estimates, development timelines, and technical deliverables.
- Track engineering progress and proactively address delays, dependencies, and technical blockers.
- Represent the company confidently during technical reviews, vendor discussions, and client meetings.
- Balance engineering quality with commercial realities, project budgets, and delivery commitments.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related discipline.
- Approximately 7–12 years of relevant experience in mechanical product development, machine design, medical devices, electromechanical products, automation, or a similar field.
- Strong hands-on experience taking physical products from concept through prototyping and manufacturing.
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks or a comparable parametric CAD platform.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, manufacturing processes, tolerances, GD&T, and assembly methods.
- Demonstrated ability to perform engineering calculations and validate designs through testing.
- Experience working directly with vendors and resolving real-world manufacturing problems.
- Experience leading projects or mentoring junior engineers.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-moving, project-driven environment.
Preferred Experience
- Experience developing medical devices or healthcare-related products.
- Experience with electromechanical systems involving motors, sensors, actuators, PCBs, wiring, batteries, heating systems, fluid systems, or embedded electronics.
- Familiarity with risk management, verification, validation, and regulated product development.
- Working knowledge of FEA, thermal analysis, tolerance analysis, and design optimisation.
- Experience with injection moulding, silicone moulding, sheet metal, CNC machining, and additive manufacturing.
- Experience preparing technical proposals, project plans, cost estimates, and client presentations.
- Exposure to quality systems, ISO 13485, design controls, or medical device documentation would be an advantage.
What We Are Looking For
The right candidate will be:
- A strong engineer first and a manager second.
- Comfortable making decisions and taking responsibility for the outcome.
- Highly practical and capable of turning concepts into working physical products.
- Willing to question assumptions and challenge technically weak approaches.
- Systematic when investigating failures and resolving engineering problems.
- Capable of balancing ideal engineering solutions with cost, timelines, available resources, and manufacturability.
- Comfortable working across multiple projects and industries.
- Able to communicate directly with clients and defend engineering decisions.
- Interested in building an engineering team and improving how product development is executed across the company.
What This Role Is Not
This is not a role for someone whose experience is limited to:
- Creating CAD models based on instructions provided by others.
- Managing teams without remaining technically hands-on.
- Working only on one narrow component or process within a large organisation.
- Preparing presentations and reports without building and testing physical products.
- Waiting for complete requirements before beginning engineering work.
Why Join iNSPIRE Design
- Work on diverse and technically challenging product development projects.
- Take meaningful ownership of products rather than working on isolated components.
- Work directly with founders, clients, researchers, doctors, startups, and manufacturing partners.
- Build prototypes and see designs progress from initial concepts to real physical products.
- Play a central role in developing the company’s engineering function.
- Opportunity to grow into broader engineering and technical leadership responsibilities as the organisation expands.
Application Requirements
Candidates should submit:
- An updated resume.
- A brief portfolio or examples of products, mechanisms, machines, or assemblies they have personally developed.
- A clear description of their individual contribution to each project.
- Details of one significant prototype or product failure they diagnosed and resolved.
- Current location, notice period, and availability for an on-site role in Ahmedabad.
