The Opportunity:
ERL Phase Power Technologies Ltd. is seeking a Lead Hardware Design Engineer for its subsidiary, Phase Power Protection Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore. We are looking for an experienced Lead Hardware Design Engineer with strong expertise in analog electronics, power electronics, and embedded hardware to design and develop Digital/Numerical Protection Relays (Intelligent Electronic Devices – IEDs) for electrical substations. The successful candidate will contribute to hardware architecture, design, and product development while working closely with Firmware, Validation, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Product Management, and other cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, reliable products. The role requires hands-on experience in end-to-end hardware product development, from concept and design through validation, certification, manufacturing, and production support. Responsibilities:
· Design and develop analog, digital, and mixed-signal hardware for Digital/Numerical Protection Relays (IEDs) from concept through production.
· Design precision analog front-end circuits for CT/PT current and voltage measurement, signal conditioning, amplification, filtering, and high-resolution ADC interfaces.
· Design isolated AC/DC and DC/DC power supplies, SMPS, and protection circuits with appropriate thermal and reliability considerations.
· Develop embedded hardware using ARM/DSP processors, FPGAs, ADCs, memory interfaces, and industrial communication peripherals.
· Perform schematic design, component selection, design calculations, PCB review, and hardware validation.
· Design and implement communication interfaces, including 100/1000BASE-T Ethernet (RJ45), fibre-optic Ethernet, RS422 and RS-485, with support for industry-standard protocols such as IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-103, and DNP3
· Ensure compliance with IEC 60255, IEC 61000, IEC 61850, CE, EMC/EMI, and other applicable industry standards through design verification and testing.
· Perform hardware debugging, root cause analysis, design verification, type testing, and field failure investigations using standard laboratory equipment.
· Support manufacturing, product release, engineering documentation, BOM management, and production issue resolution throughout the product lifecycle.
· Develop reliable, high-performance, and maintainable hardware designs with a focus on manufacturability, component lifecycle, and long-term product support.
· Stay current with emerging hardware technologies, components, and design practices to continuously improve product performance and quality.
Skills and Qualifications:
· B.E./B.Tech or M.E./M.Tech in Electronics & Communication, Electrical, Instrumentation, or related discipline with 10 to 15 years of hands-on experience in hardware design and product development.
· Strong expertise in Analog & Power Electronics, including CT/PT interfaces, signal conditioning, ADCs, isolated power supplies, and embedded hardware.
· Hands-on experience with ARM/DSP processors, FPGAs, DDR/NOR/NAND Flash, Ethernet, RS422, RS485 and industrial communication protocols such as IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-103, and DNP3.
· Proficiency in Cadence OrCAD Capture, Cadence Allegro PCB Designer, LTspice EDA Tools and schematic design, PCB review, hardware validation, and debugging using standard laboratory equipment.
· Good understanding of EMC/EMI, electrical isolation, surge protection, reliability engineering, and compliance with IEC 60255, IEC 61000, and other relevant industry standards.
· Experience in Digital/Numerical Protection Relays, Substation Automation, Smart Grid, or Electrical Power System products with strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
