Position Title: Junior Roaster
Department: Roasting & Production Operations
Reports To: Head Roaster
Role Overview
The Junior Roaster supports daily coffee production roasting, inventory tracking, quality checks, and the development of a strong coffee ecosystem. Working alongside the Head Roaster, this role supports new product development, quality control, smooth shift operations, product consistency, and maintaining a clean, audit-ready production unit.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Roasting Execution
• Prepare and operate roasting machines and execute daily roasting schedules for core blends and specialty lots.
• Monitor heat, airflow, roast development, and roast profiles to ensure batch consistency, accurate colour, and correct yields.
• Perform basic moisture, density, and colour checks.
• Maintain accurate production records and ensure smooth shift handovers.
Inventory & Stock Tracking
• Update daily green coffee and finished stock records across inventory sheets and systems.
• Follow First-In, First-Out (FIFO) stock rotation with clear labelling to maintain bean freshness.
• Assist with bi-monthly inventory counts to maintain stock accuracy and prevent production delays.
Quality Control & Cupping
• Set up and participate in daily cupping sessions to evaluate taste consistency across batches.
• Log cupping scores and maintain sample retention records.
• Use tasting feedback and roast data to support adjustments and fine-tuning of roast profiles.
Product & Process Improvement
• Contribute to roasting trials, product development, innovation, and process optimisation.
• Identify opportunities to improve roasting consistency, production efficiency, and workflows.
• Explore smart use of AI and digital tools to improve production tracking, documentation, analysis, and cross-functional communication.
Compliance & Risk Escalation
• Maintain IMO organic compliance, food safety, hygiene, and organic certification standards.
• Keep required production and quality logs updated for routine audits.
• Promptly escalate operational, quality, or machine-related issues to minimise downtime.
Requirements & Skills
• Minimum 1 year of hands-on professional coffee roasting experience is mandatory.
• Prior experience operating a commercial coffee roaster and executing production roast batches.
• Practical understanding of roast profiles, roast development, heat and airflow adjustments, and batch consistency.
• Basic knowledge of specialty coffee, green coffee characteristics, and SCA cupping protocols.
• Ability to identify basic roasting defects and understand how roasting variables affect the final cup.
• Familiarity with inventory tracking tools and spreadsheets.
• Good understanding of food hygiene and production workspace safety.
• Strong attention to detail, reliability, record keeping, and teamwork.
• Barista experience or coffee certifications are an advantage, but do not substitute for the required hands-on roasting experience.
