As a Furniture Design Engineer, you’ll work closely with Design, Manufacturing, Sourcing, Quality and Operations teams to take furniture products from design handover through engineering, prototyping, production and mass manufacturing.
This role is ideal for someone who combines strong engineering fundamentals with hands-on experience in furniture construction, materials, manufacturing processes and costing.
Important
We’re looking for someone who has personally taken furniture products from concept/design through prototyping and into mass production.
This is not a role focused only on CAD, drawings or documentation. You should be comfortable working with factories and vendors, solving real manufacturing challenges and making products production-ready.
What You’ll Do
Product Engineering & Development
- Convert design concepts into production-ready furniture.
- Develop 3D models, assemblies and detailed engineering drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Define joints, hardware, mechanisms, tolerances, materials, finishes and assembly methods.
- Work on prototypes and production trials to identify and resolve engineering or manufacturing issues.
- Refine designs based on testing, manufacturing feedback and production requirements.
Design for Mass Manufacturing
- Design furniture for efficient, repeatable and cost-effective production.
- Work with materials such as wood, plywood, MDF, particle board, metal, upholstery, plastics and hardware.
- Apply practical knowledge of manufacturing processes including:
- CNC machining
- Panel processing
- Edge banding
- Drilling
- Welding
- Bending
- Powder coating
- Upholstery
- Optimize product construction, part count, material usage and assembly methods.
- Work directly with factories and vendors to ensure designs are practical and scalable for production.
Technical Documentation, BOM & Costing
- Create production drawings, assembly drawings, specifications and BOMs.
- Prepare cost and should-cost estimates.
- Support value engineering and cost-reduction initiatives without compromising product quality or design intent.
- Ensure engineering documentation is clear and production-ready.
Prototyping & Product Validation
- Build and evaluate functional prototypes.
- Test products for structural strength, usability and manufacturability.
- Identify design or manufacturing failures and develop practical solutions.
- Drive design iterations based on prototype testing and production feedback.
Project Ownership & Collaboration
- Own assigned projects from engineering through production launch.
- Plan engineering activities and ensure projects stay on track with agreed timelines.
- Work closely with Design, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Quality and Operations teams.
- Identify risks early and take ownership of resolving engineering and manufacturing challenges.
- Support products through to successful production and launch.
What We’re Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in furniture engineering, product development or manufacturing.
- Proven experience taking furniture products from concept to mass production.
- Strong hands-on skills in SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Good understanding of furniture construction, materials, hardware, joinery and manufacturing processes.
- Experience with production drawings, BOMs, costing, value engineering and tolerances.
- Understanding of fit, finish and manufacturing quality requirements.
- Experience working directly with factories and vendors.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Good communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- Ability to independently manage projects and take ownership of outcomes.
- Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Furniture Technology, Product Design Engineering or a related field is preferred.
What We Value
- Manufacturing mindset – You think about how a product will actually be made.
- Attention to detail – You care about fit, finish, tolerances and quality.
- Commercial awareness – You understand the importance of cost, scalability and efficiency.
- Ownership – You take responsibility from engineering through production.
- Collaboration – You enjoy solving problems with designers, factories, vendors and cross-functional teams.
