CMM Engineer – Roles & Responsibilities
1. CMM Operation & Programming
- Operate Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), preferably Carl Zeiss.
- Create and modify CMM inspection programs for new and existing components.
- Develop measurement programs using software such as CALYPSO.
- Optimize programs for accuracy and inspection cycle time.
2. Dimensional Inspection
- Inspect machined and cast components as per engineering drawings and specifications.
- Measure critical dimensions, GD&T characteristics, profiles, flatness, concentricity, position, runout, etc.
- Perform first-off, in-process and final inspection.
3. Drawing & GD&T
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T and tolerance requirements.
- Understand datum structures and apply appropriate measurement methods.
- Verify component dimensions against customer specifications.
4. Casting Inspection
- Inspect critical casting features before and after machining.
- Check casting dimensions, machining allowances, hole locations and critical features.
- Support investigation of dimensional issues related to casting defects or machining variations.
5. Machining Process Support
- Work closely with Production, CNC/VMC/HMC, Quality and NPD teams.
- Provide dimensional feedback to setters/programmers for process correction.
- Identify trends in dimensional variation and support process improvement.
6. Inspection Reports & Documentation
- Prepare and maintain CMM inspection reports.
- Maintain inspection records, calibration records and measurement data.
- Prepare reports for NPD, PPAP, customer approval and rejection analysis.
- Maintain traceability of inspection results.
7. Problem Solving & Quality Improvement
- Analyze dimensional deviations and identify root causes.
- Support 8D, CAPA and corrective/preventive actions.
- Participate in Root Cause Analysis, Kaizen and continuous improvement activities.
8. Calibration & CMM Maintenance
- Ensure CMM accuracy and proper machine condition.
- Coordinate periodic CMM calibration and verification.
- Maintain probes, fixtures and measuring accessories.
Key Skills Required
- Carl Zeiss CMM
- GD&T knowledge
- Engineering drawing reading
- CNC machining & casting process knowledge
- Basic knowledge of SPC, MSA and capability studies
- Knowledge of inspection gauges and measuring instruments
- Root Cause Analysis / 8D
- Good coordination with Production, Quality and NPD teams
Suggested Experience
2–6 years of experience in CMM inspection/programming, preferably in automotive machining and CI casting components.
Key requirement: Hands-on experience with Carl Zeiss CMM along with good knowledge of machining, casting and GD&T.
