Role description: Solution / Technical Architect

Job Overview
We're looking for an Architect who can wear multiple hats — someone who is as comfortable whiteboarding a system design with leadership as they are reviewing a pull request with engineers. You'll own the technical architecture of our applications, while also acting as the bridge between business needs, product priorities, and engineering execution.
This isn't a role for someone who wants to sit purely in PowerPoint decks or purely in code — we need someone who moves fluidly between strategy and hands-on delivery, and who can simplify complex technical and business problems into architecture that scales.
Key responsibilities
- Own end-to-end architecture for our web applications — front-end (React.js), back-end (Node.js), APIs, data layer, and cloud infrastructure (AWS).
- Design for scale and resilience — define architecture principles, design patterns, and best practices across the stack.
- Translate business requirements into technical solutions — work closely with product, business stakeholders, and delivery teams to convert ideas into buildable, scalable systems.
- Be hands-on when needed — review code, prototype solutions, unblock engineers, and step into implementation for critical or ambiguous problems.
- Drive AWS cloud strategy — architecture for compute, storage, networking, security, and cost optimization (e.g., EC2/ECS/Lambda, S3, RDS/DynamoDB, API Gateway, CloudFront, IAM).
- Own non-functional requirements — performance, security, scalability, observability, and reliability of the application.
- Mentor and guide engineering teams — raise the technical bar, share knowledge, and help developers grow.
- Evaluate and introduce new technologies/tools where they add real value, avoiding complexity for its own sake.
- Create and maintain architecture documentation — system diagrams, design decisions (ADRs), and technical roadmaps.
- Participate in technical governance — code/design reviews, sprint planning input, and cross-team alignment on architecture standards.
- Act as a connector — between engineering, product, design, and business, ensuring everyone shares a common understanding of the "why" behind technical decisions.
- Act as the primary client-facing representative, engaging directly with clients to build strong relationships, lead discussions, and ensure effective communication throughout the project lifecycle.
- Understand client business challenges, pain points, and requirements by conducting detailed requirement-gathering sessions and translating business needs into actionable solutions.
- Provide proactive solutions and recommendations to address client concerns, manage expectations, and ensure the successful delivery of outcomes that align with client objectives and business goals.
Must-Have Qualifications
Technical Skills
- Strong hands-on experience with React.js (component architecture, state management, performance optimization).
- Strong hands-on experience with Node.js (API design, microservices/monolith trade-offs, async patterns).
- Solid experience architecting and deploying on AWS (compute, storage, networking, security, IAM, CI/CD pipelines).
- Good understanding of databases (SQL and/or NoSQL) and data modeling.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices — CI/CD, containerization (Docker), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/CloudFormation) is a plus.
- Understanding of security best practices (authentication, authorization, data protection).
Architectural & Business Skills
- Ability to simplify complexity — translate ambiguous business needs into clear technical architecture.
- Strong communication skills — equally comfortable presenting to leadership and pairing with engineers.
- Experience defining architecture principles, standards, and roadmaps rather than just individual solutions.
- A "multiple hats" mindset — able to flex between strategist, hands-on builder, mentor, and stakeholder communicator depending on what the moment needs.
- Comfortable challenging assumptions and driving sound decision-making across business and technology teams.
Experience
- 8+ years in software engineering, with 5+ years in an architect or senior technical leadership role.
- Proven experience owning architecture for production applications on the React/Node/AWS stack (or a closely comparable stack).
- Experience working directly with business/product stakeholders to shape technical direction — not just executing requirements handed down.
