Position Overview
The Night Watchman / Security Officer helps protect company people, property, and assets during overnight hours by monitoring the facility, conducting routine patrols, controlling access, responding to alarms and incidents, and documenting activity. This role requires reliability, strong situational awareness, and the ability to remain calm and professional while working independently.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct scheduled and unscheduled patrols of the building and surrounding grounds; check doors, windows, gates, and restricted areas.
- Monitor security cameras, alarm panels, and other surveillance systems; investigate unusual activity.
- Control after-hours access by verifying identification/authorization and maintaining a visitor/contractor log, as applicable.
- Respond to alarms, safety hazards, and incidents; contact emergency services when needed and follow established escalation procedures.
- Document shift activity, patrol checks, incidents, and maintenance/safety concerns in written reports and logbooks.
- Perform basic safety checks (e.g., lights, HVAC noises/leaks, water issues) and submit work requests or notify on-call personnel.
- Provide a visible security presence and professional customer service to employees and authorized visitors.
- Support building opening/closing procedures and secure keys, badges, and access control devices per policy.
- Follow all company policies, confidentiality requirements, and safety procedures; attend required trainings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1+ year of security, facilities, customer service, or related experience (or equivalent combination of training/experience).
- Ability to work overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
- Strong attention to detail, integrity, and dependability; ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for incident reporting and radio/phone communications.
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and perform routine patrols, including stairs and outdoor areas.
- Ability to pass background check and meet any site-specific security requirements.
Preferred
- Security Guard Card and/or CPR/First Aid certification (as applicable by state/site).
- Experience with CCTV, access control systems, and incident reporting tools.
- Prior experience in corporate office, financial services, or similar professional environment.
Working Conditions
- Overnight schedule; may include weekends and holidays.
- Work performed indoors and outdoors; exposure to weather during exterior patrols.
- Physical requirements include walking, standing, climbing stairs, and occasional lifting up to 35 lbs.
- May be required to respond quickly to emergencies, alarms, or building issues.
