AI Engineer & Researcher - Pre-training Scaling, Data, and Eval

xAI’s mission is to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. The team is small, highly motivated, and focused on engineering excellence with a flat organizational structure. Employees are expected to be hands-on, contribute directly to the company’s mission, and demonstrate strong communication skills. The role is based in the Bay Area (San Francisco and Palo Alto), with candidates expected to be located near or open to relocation. The focus includes training trillion parameter neural networks at scale, implementing state-of-the-art deep learning methods, innovating new pretraining and scaling paradigms, and improving pretraining data quality across different modalities. Ideal candidates have strong engineering skills, expertise in ML and large model scaling, familiarity with distributed training and multi-GPU neural network training, and experience with AI training data preparation and management across multiple clouds and modalities. The interview process includes a CV review, a 15-minute phone interview, and four technical interviews covering coding, systems hands-on, project deep-dive, and team meet and greet, all conducted via Google Meet.
