Position Purpose
A well-funded digital-assets business is building a regulated crypto exchange — spot, futures, and options — launching India-first with an architecture designed for a global rollout. As Head of Engineering, you'll own the platform and the team behind it: architecture, delivery, security posture, and the confidence to answer when a regulator, an auditor, the CEO, or the board asks whether it holds.
This isn't a vendor platform and a support rota. The business built its own matching engine — a JVM core on Aeron cluster consensus with binary SBE messaging on the hot path, event-sourced with snapshot and replay recovery. Around it sit a double-entry ledger, MPC custody, a self-custody EVM stack with proprietary smart-contract wallets, and a compliance and reporting platform for regulated markets.
The core is built and India spot is live. The next chapter is the ambitious one: take a platform proven in one market and make it demonstrably world-class in several — measured against real SLOs, hardened to custody-business standards, launching derivatives, and adding markets without rebuilding the exchange each time. It's a rare mandate: a real engine, a real ledger, a live launch, and the room to take all of it global.
Key Responsibilities:
Technology Strategy & Architecture
- Own technical direction end to end — matching engine, ledger, custody, compliance platform, data, infrastructure, and security.
- Treat the current architecture as a strong starting point, not a constraint — take it further wherever it should go.
- Own build-vs-buy-vs-partner decisions across the platform and make the case for each.
Delivery & Execution
- Ship derivatives — perpetual futures first, options next — building the per-client risk, margin, liquidation, and reconciliation layer.
- Prove the multi-market thesis: make adding a country a matter of edges and configuration, not a rebuild, and take the next market live on that pattern.
- Own performance and resilience as measured facts — benchmarks, SLOs, error budgets, load testing, and recovery drills.
Security, Risk & Resilience
- Act as the accountable technical owner for a business that holds customer assets — key management, custody architecture, secrets, access control, threat modelling, incident response, and disaster recovery.
- Set the security roadmap and its investment case.
Regulatory & Compliance Technology
- Own the technology that makes compliance real — reporting, surveillance, monitoring, and the controls a regulator needs to see working, across more than one regime.
- Act as the technical voice in front of regulators, auditors, and partners' due diligence.
People & Organisation
- Lead, coach, and scale an engineering team of around 15 across backend, frontend, infrastructure, QA, and security, working alongside contract partners.
- Own the shape of the org — what's in-house, what's contracted, structure, levels, hiring, and the technical bar.
- Build the engineering operating system — architecture governance, design and code review, release management, on-call, and the rituals that let a small team ship safely at speed.
Commercial & Executive
- Own the engineering budget — cloud, vendors, licences, headcount — and the case for it.
- Own the technical side of vendor and partner relationships — custody, KYC, liquidity, cloud.
- Represent engineering at the executive table and to the board — investment cases, delivery confidence, and risk, in language they can act on.
Requirements
Technical Skills
- Deep experience with low-latency, high-throughput transaction systems — you think in tail latency, backpressure, and failure modes.
- Security and resilience leadership where customer money is at stake.
- Breadth across engine, infrastructure, data, security, compliance, and front end.
Domain & Leadership Experience
- Senior technology leadership (CTO, VP Engineering, or Head of Engineering) in crypto, trading, exchange, brokerage, payments, or regulated fintech, with real depth rather than oversight from a distance.
- A player-coach mindset — direction-setting while staying close enough to the work to know what's really going on.
Soft Skills
- Organisation building — hiring, structure, coaching senior engineers, deciding what's in-house versus contracted.
- Commercial judgement — comfortable owning a budget, negotiating a vendor, and making a build-vs-buy case to a board.
Desirable Skills
- Built or operated a matching engine, OMS, or exchange core in production.
- JVM depth; Aeron, SBE, or comparable binary/low-latency messaging.
- Event-driven and event-sourced systems, including replay, recovery, schema evolution.
- Kubernetes, Terraform, multi-account cloud at production scale.
- Custody, MPC, or smart-contract wallets.
- Derivatives — margin, liquidation, funding, risk engines.
- Multi-region or multi-country delivery under differing regulators.
- India (FIU-IND, CERT-In, DPDP) or Australia (AUSTRAC) regulatory experience.
- Fluency with AI-assisted engineering.
- Experience taking a platform through an audit, regulatory review, or technical due diligence.
