Job details:
About/ Summary (of Centre or Project): The Motilal Oswal Centre for Capital Markets (MOCCM) has been established to lead research in capital markets in addition to offering degree and certificate programmes in financial markets. The Centre aims to advance knowledge, innovation, and leadership for the sustainable growth of financial markets.
Job Purpose:
The Motilal Oswal Centre for Capital Markets (MOCCM) at IIT Bombay is establishing world class computational infrastructure to support research in the area of financial markets. We are looking to recruit a high-calibre systems engineer with excellent hardware/infrastructure capabilities, and strong quantitative and capital markets research ambitions. The primary responsibility includes full administration, performance tuning, and security architecture of the Centre’s multi-node HPC clusters, low-latency network fabric, and massive multi-asset financial market datasets. The role also provides an opportunity to utilize this infrastructure to design, execute, and support applied research, and public-facing analytical dashboards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Core infrastructure and cluster administration
- HPC cluster management: Act as the primary administrator for the Centre’s multi-node, dual-socket AMD EPYC server clusters equipped with enterprise hardware acceleration units, including NVIDIA RTX Pro GPUs and Xilinx Alveo FPGAs.
- Network fabric optimization: Configure, maintain, and monitor the Arista DCS-7060SX2-48YC6-F network switches. Fine-tune cut-through forwarding pipelines, evaluate FIFO/LITE port-to-port latency metrics, and optimize RoCE v2 storage pathways to eliminate microburst queuing bottlenecks.
- Data engine architecture: Build, automate, and maintain scalable ingestion and compression pipelines to handle massive, multi-terabyte point-in-time tick-by-tick and order-book data streams sourced from vendors.
- Data custodianship and security: Enforce strict role-based access control (RBAC), user entitlement mapping, and isolated virtual research clean rooms to guarantee ironclad security and licensing compliance with data vendors.
- Virtualization and uptime: Manage the virtualization layer across the cluster environment to ensure seamless, high-availability remote access for users on campus.
2. Quantitative research and infrastructure output
- Applied research collaboration: Partner with IITB faculty, visiting scholars, and corporate partners to execute algorithmic back testing simulations, asset pricing validation models, and market microstructure analysis.
- Technical Support: Support Centre whitepapers, data methodology briefs, and open-source quantitative tooling libraries to be published through the MOCCM research repository.
Desired Profile:
- Education: B.Tech/B.E. or M.Tech/M.E. in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics, or relevant engineering disciplines from a reputed institution.
- Experience: 2-3 years of hands-on experience in Linux systems administration, IT infrastructure management, data engineering, building and maintaining database systems. M.Tech. graduates with a highly technical, relevant knowledge (dissertation) or deep practical experience in Linux environment, cluster computing, database engineering may be considered.
Essential technical skills:
- Core operating systems: Very good understanding of Linux/Ubuntu administration, user management, bash scripting, and basic network troubleshooting (SSH, firewall configurations, IP routing).
- Data & scripting: Strong programming proficiency in Python and familiarity with standard SQL databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL) for managing structured data tables.
- Modern workflows: Basic familiarity with Docker containers to help researchers package their code environments consistently.
Desired Skills:
- Strong quantitative intuition and a demonstrated, proactive interest in stock markets, algorithmic trading, financial machine learning, or financial engineering.
- Ability to handle intense context-switching between operational IT troubleshooting and high-level financial research logic.
- High degree of professional integrity to act as a trusted data custodian for restricted-use datasets.
