Job Title: Design Engineer-Low Voltage
Job Description
The Design Engineer will lead and support engineering activities focused on supplier changes, product localization, and mechanical/electromechanical design for low-voltage products and components. This role drives end-to-end execution of supplier change projects, develops and adapts designs to meet local manufacturing capabilities, and ensures compliance with international standards and regulatory requirements. The position involves creating and optimizing CAD models and technical documentation, defining and executing validation and testing plans, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to achieve cost, quality, and performance targets.
Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end execution of supplier change projects for low-voltage products and components, ensuring timely and effective implementation.
- Perform design validation and impact analysis, including assessment of form, fit, and function for components and assemblies.
- Ensure technical equivalence or improvement compared to existing designs when executing supplier changes or design modifications.
- Collaborate closely with procurement, quality, and suppliers during qualification phases to secure robust and reliable supply solutions.
- Support PPAP and industrialization activities to ensure smooth transition from design to manufacturing.
- Drive localization initiatives and cost optimization projects that align with business targets and strategic objectives.
- Redesign or adapt components to meet local manufacturing and sourcing capabilities while maintaining performance and reliability.
- Ensure compliance with international standards such as IEC and UL, as well as local regulatory requirements, throughout the design and localization process.
- Balance cost, quality, and performance trade-offs when making design decisions for localized products and components.
- Execute or support mechanical and electromechanical design modifications for MCCB, ACB, and MCB components, busway systems, enclosures and structural parts, and accessories including rotary handles, trip units, and motor mechanisms.
- Create and update CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and related technical documentation to reflect design changes and new developments.
- Perform tolerance analysis, material selection, and design optimization to improve product performance, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Apply strong knowledge of materials such as plastics, copper, aluminium, and steel to select appropriate materials for components and assemblies.
- Utilize manufacturing knowledge for moulding processes to design components that are feasible and efficient to produce.
- Define and develop validation plans at both component and product levels, ensuring that designs meet functional and reliability requirements.
- Support or coordinate mechanical testing, including endurance, stress, and thermal tests, to validate product performance under various conditions.
- Support or coordinate electrical testing, including breaking capacity and insulation tests, to verify compliance with electrical performance and safety standards.
- Analyse test results and implement corrective design actions to address issues and enhance product robustness.
- Work closely with procurement and supplier quality teams to align on supplier capabilities, quality expectations, and cost objectives.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and industrialization teams to ensure that designs are optimized for production and meet industrialization requirements.
- Partner with product management and R&D teams to align technical deliverables with product strategy, market needs, and project timelines.
- Ensure alignment across functions on cost, timeline, and technical deliverables, and proactively communicate project status and risks.
- Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills by simplifying complex technical topics and presenting clear, structured information.
- Set clear goals and communicate priorities to stakeholders, enabling efficient execution of design and localization projects.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience in mechanical and electromechanical design for low-voltage products such as MCCB, ACB, and MCB components, busway systems, enclosures, structural parts, and related accessories.
- Proficiency in CREO and CAD-based design tools for creating and updating models, drawings, and technical documentation.
- Strong understanding of low-voltage systems and components, including design constraints and performance requirements.
- Ability to perform design validation and impact analysis focused on form, fit, and function.
- Experience supporting PPAP and industrialization activities and working within structured product development processes.
- Solid knowledge of materials including plastics, copper, aluminium, and steel, and their application in product design.
- Good understanding of manufacturing processes for moulding and their implications on design and tolerances.
- Capability to define and develop validation plans at component and product levels.
- Experience with mechanical testing such as endurance, stress, and thermal testing, and the ability to interpret results.
- Experience with electrical testing such as breaking capacity and insulation testing for low-voltage products.
- Familiarity with international standards and regulations, particularly IEC and UL, relevant to low-voltage equipment.
- Strong analytical skills to conduct tolerance analysis, material selection, and design optimization.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to simplify complexity and convey technical information clearly.
- Ability to set clear goals, establish priorities, and drive projects to completion in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience leading end-to-end supplier change projects for low-voltage products and components.
- localization and cost optimization initiatives aligned with business and market requirements.
- Exposure to cross-functional collaboration with procurement, supplier quality, manufacturing, industrialization, product management, and R&D teams.
- Understanding of regulatory environments for electrical products and the ability to ensure compliance in design and testing.
- Experience creating and managing bills of materials (BOMs) and technical documentation in an engineering environment.
- Ability to balance cost, quality, and performance trade-offs when making design and sourcing decisions.
- Comfort working within structured qualification and validation frameworks, including component-level and product-level testing.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing multiple projects, documentation, and timelines.
