About the Role
To lead and deliver end-to-end design of ICT and telecommunications infrastructure for mission-critical and data centre environments, spanning both active and passive systems, together with associated ELV and building communication systems. The role owns the technical design, documentation, and quality of telecom/ICT deliverables from concept through detailed design, tender, and construction support, while ensuring compliance with client governing standards and applicable industry codes. This role requires 70% travel across the region.
Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
- Develop concept, schematic, and detailed design for ICT/telecom systems covering both Active (electronics, switching, transmission, wireless) and Passive (structured cabling, pathways, containment) infrastructure.
- Produce rack elevations, equipment layouts, and space/power/cooling allocation for MDA/IDA/HDA and telecom/entrance rooms in line with data centre topology standards (e.g., TIA-942, ISO/IEC 11801, ANSI/TIA-568).
- Design Outside Plant (OSP) infrastructure — duct banks, manholes/handholes, campus fibre backbone routing, entrance facility diversity, and cable path redundancy.
- Design Inside Plant (ISP) infrastructure — riser and horizontal cabling, cable tray/basket routing, telecom room layouts, and pathway fill calculations.
- Design FTTX (fibre-to-the-x) architectures — GPON/active Ethernet, OLT/ONT placement, splitter hierarchy, fibre distribution hubs, and optical link-loss budgets for campus and building distribution.
- Engineer fibre optic and copper (Cu) cabling systems: fibre type selection (OS2/OM4/OM5), Cu category selection (Cat 6A and above), link/channel performance, and testing/certification criteria.
Network Infrastructure & Active Systems
- Design and specify network switching and routing infrastructure using Cisco, Juniper, Arista and other enterprise/data-centre platforms — spine-leaf and three-tier architectures, aggregation/access layers, and out-of-band management networks.
- Apply sound knowledge of networking protocols across Layer 2 and Layer 3 — spanning tree (RSTP/MSTP), ERPS, link aggregation (LACP), gateway redundancy (VRRP/HSRP), and routing (OSPF, BGP) — for resilient campus ring and data centre fabric topologies.
- Design and specify EPABX / IP Telephony systems, including SIP trunking, call server architecture, endpoint provisioning, and integration with campus voice infrastructure.
- Design Wi-Fi / Wireless LAN systems — AP placement, RF heat-map/predictive surveys, controller architecture, capacity and coverage planning.
- Design Distributed Antenna System (DAS) for in-building cellular coverage — head-end, remote units, coax/fibre distribution, and coverage/link-budget analysis.
- Design Radio Communication systems, including two-way radio / land mobile radio (LMR/TETRA), coverage planning, antenna systems, and interoperability with site operations.
ELV & Building Communication Systems
- Design IP CCTV / Video Surveillance Systems — camera selection and placement, field-of-view and pixel-density analysis, VMS architecture, storage/retention sizing, PoE budgets, and network segregation, aligned to ONVIF and applicable client security requirements.
- Design Audio-Visual (AV) systems for meeting rooms, NOC/SOC video walls, town-hall and training spaces — displays, video wall controllers, audio DSP, conferencing integration, and AV-over-IP distribution.
- Design Video Door Phone (VDP) and Intercom systems — IP-based door stations, master/sub-station architecture, integration with access control and security operations, and emergency/help-point call stations.
- Design Master Clock systems — NTP/PTP time source architecture, GPS/GNSS receivers, analogue and digital slave clock distribution, and synchronised timing for CCTV, access control, BMS, and IT systems.
Cabling Media & Connectivity
- Sound working knowledge of both fibre optic and copper (Cu) cabling — media selection, performance classes, testing, and certification.
- Specify fibre connectors and interfaces — LC, SC, MPO/MTP (and polarity methods A/B/C), duplex vs. parallel optics, and pre-terminated trunk systems for high-density data centre applications.
- Specify copper terminations, patching schemes, and modular connectivity aligned to structured cabling standards.
Documentation & Deliverables
- Prepare Basis of Design (BOD), technical specifications, Bill of Quantities (BOQ), design calculations, and tender/procurement documentation.
- Produce single-line diagrams, schematics, floor plans, riser diagrams, containment routing overlays, and rack elevations using CAD/BIM tools.
- Review and interpret client governing documents and translate requirements into compliant design deliverables.
Coordination & Delivery Support
- Coordinate telecom/ICT design with architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, and security/ELV disciplines to resolve clashes and integrate pathways.
- Support tender evaluation, technical clarifications, and value engineering.
- Provide construction-phase support: shop drawing review, RFI responses, site inspections, and witnessing of testing/commissioning.
- Interface with client, consultants, contractors, and vendors; represent design in technical meetings and produce/track minutes and clarifications.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electronics & Communication / Telecommunications / Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
- 8–12 years of ICT/telecom design experience, with a significant portion on data centre or mission-critical facilities.
- Proven track record of delivering formal design packages (BOD, specifications, BOQ, drawings) through the full project lifecycle.
- Relevant professional certifications are an advantage (e.g., RCDD, CCNA/CCNP, JNCIA/JNCIP, Wi-Fi vendor certifications, DAS/DCDC, CTS for AV).
