About the role
We’re looking for a senior platform architect to lead the design and delivery of our private-cloud infrastructure on Kubernetes-native OpenStack. You’ll own the architecture for a large, multi-region OpenStack environment — driving its modernization, reliability, and long-term operating model — and act as the senior technical anchor the rest of the platform team builds around.
This is a hands-on architecture role for someone who is equally comfortable making control-plane design decisions, writing the plan that sequences a multi-quarter program, and partnering across teams to land it. You turn ambiguous, large-scale infrastructure goals into clear designs with owners, milestones, and measurable outcomes.
What you’ll own
- Cloud architecture for a multi-region OpenStack platform: Nova scheduling and capacity strategy, Neutron networking (OVS/OVN), Cinder/Glance, Keystone identity, and Placement.
- Platform modernization: designing and sequencing the move to a Kubernetes-native OpenStack model (e.g., OpenStack-Helm / Atmosphere-style deployments), including region rollout strategy, upgrade and rollback paths, and cutover planning.
- Storage architecture: Ceph design and operations (RBD/RGW, CRUSH, rebalancing, tiering) to enable capabilities such as live migration and resilient shared storage.
- Control-plane resilience: highly-available identity and database design, including the trade-offs of running stateful services across regions.
- Day-2 operations: the runbooks, SLOs, observability, and operational discipline that keep the platform healthy after deployment.
- Technical leadership: setting the engineering standard for design, documentation, and delivery, and mentoring senior and mid-level engineers toward it.
- Cross-functional delivery: partnering with networking, operations, and infrastructure teams to resolve dependencies and keep programs moving.
Must-have experience
- Architected and operated OpenStack at scale in production — multi-region, hundreds or more of hypervisors — with depth across Nova, Neutron, Cinder, Glance, Keystone, and Placement.
- Kubernetes-native OpenStack experience: running the OpenStack control plane as Kubernetes workloads (OpenStack-Helm, Atmosphere, or equivalent).
- Strong Ceph design and operational experience for block and object storage.
- Led a platform migration or modernization program end to end — sequencing, risk management, cutover, and rollback — not just isolated component work.
- Bare-metal provisioning and lifecycle tooling (MAAS, Ironic, or similar).
- GitOps delivery (Argo CD / Flux) and modern observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, or equivalents).
- A track record of influencing across team and org boundaries to unblock complex dependencies.
Strongly preferred
- Software-defined networking depth (OVN, BGP/FRR, driver-level Neutron work).
- Experience designing highly-available identity across distributed or high-latency links.
- Hardware reliability and firmware-level failure analysis.
- Identity and secrets modernization (Okta, Keycloak, Vault, Barbican).
- Infrastructure-as-code at scale (Ansible, Terraform) and CI/CD for infrastructure.
What success looks like
First 90 days : fluent in the platform’s architecture; Owning a modernization design and shepherding a pilot environment through to a clean handover; A migration plan with named owners and dates.
First year : Measurable improvement in platform reliability and operability; Modern deployment and Day-2 practices adopted by the team; Reduced single-points-of-knowledge; The team leveling up around your standard.
