Senior Service Designer (Contract) – Geotechnical Monitoring Transformation

About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Senior Service Designer to lead a human-centred service design engagement focused on transforming the monitoring data lifecycle for geotechnical hazards, including landslides and other risks affecting public safety and transportation infrastructure.
The successful candidate will work closely with project sponsors and stakeholders to understand the current monitoring ecosystem, identify opportunities for improvement, and design a future-state operating model that strengthens internal capabilities and reduces reliance on external consultants.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced service designer who thrives in complex environments and enjoys translating research insights into practical, user-centered solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Phase 1 – Alignment & Planning
- Develop research plans and project workplans.
- Conduct desk research and define the problem space.
- Identify internal and external users and stakeholders.
- Collaborate with project sponsors and service design teams.
- Prepare stakeholder maps, recruitment plans, and interview guides.
- Deliver kickoff presentations and project planning materials.
Phase 2 – Discovery Research
- Conduct user interviews and stakeholder research.
- Perform jurisdictional scans and comparative research.
- Document current-state monitoring processes and data flows.
- Facilitate process mapping and service analysis.
- Synthesize research findings into actionable insights.
- Develop journey maps, personas, process maps, and opportunity logs.
- Present findings and recommendations to project sponsors.
Phase 3 – Opportunities & Recommendations
- Facilitate workshops to identify future-state opportunities.
- Define success metrics and performance indicators.
- Develop user stories and preliminary system requirements.
- Produce final service design artefacts, including:
- Personas
- Journey Maps
- Service Blueprints
- Current and Future-State Process Maps
- Opportunity Log
- Support transition of findings into Agile delivery teams.

Required Experience
- 5+ years of recent experience in Service Design.
- Experience leading discovery research with diverse stakeholder groups.

- Process Improvement
- Experience working within large, complex organizations.
- Ability to communicate findings clearly to executive and technical audiences.
- Experience working in Agile environments is preferred.

- Clarifying product ownership and operational stewardship.
- Recommending improvements to processes, technology, and governance.
- Supporting the design of a sustainable, internally led monitoring program.
