Job details:
Staff Engineer
- Architecting scalable solutions, influencing strategy, and multiplying impact across engineering teams.
- Opportunity to be one of our first team members in Woolworths Group India in Bangalore,
Woolworths Group India is partnering exclusively with Zinnov Group to recruit for this position.
About the role
As a Staff Engineer, you are an expert engineer and high-leverage technical leader who solves the most complex problems across your Sub Domain while scaling your impact across multiple squads. You set the benchmark for coding, testing, and Well-Architected design, ensuring that agreed engineering patterns and guardrails are applied consistently to deliver functional objectives at pace and with high quality.
In partnership with the Principal Engineer you are the thought-leader for your assigned squad(s) on how systems should be designed, deployed, and operated in production. You own the evaluation and selection of pre-approved applications and architectural approaches within the guardrails defined by the Principal Engineer and Domain Architect, weighing trade-offs across performance, cost, resilience, and maintainability, and you drive the evolution of engineering standards, tooling, and the software development lifecycle to raise the capability of the the engineers in your squad(s) and to contribute to this across the whole team.
You leverage AI-augmented workflows as a force multiplier to accelerate system design, automate governance, and synthesise complex organisational data. AI is a tool in your kit, not a substitute for engineering judgment. You are equally adept at engaging business stakeholders to identify the best technology options for business outcomes, championing a culture of innovation and technical excellence aligned with long-term strategic goals.
What you’ll do
Strategic Architecture, Cloud Design & Scalable Solutions
- Architectural Decision Ownership: Lead the design and implementation of scalable, high-performing software solutions. Evaluate multiple architectural options for each significant decision for the pre-approved list, ensure compliance with the architectural guardrails set by the Domain Architect and Principal Engineer, producing structured trade-off analyses that weigh factors including performance, cost, resilience, operational complexity, and time-to-deliver. Document decisions and rejected alternatives through Architectural Decision Records for Architecture Review Board review.
- Cloud Infrastructure & Deployment: Own the design of cloud-native solutions across Azure and Google Cloud Platform for your squad(s), including compute model selection (serverless, containers, managed services), networking topology, data platform choices, and infrastructure resilience patterns (disaster recovery, failover, multi-region). Design and improve deployment strategies including blue/green, canary, and progressive rollout pipelines.
- Infrastructure-as-Code & Environment Strategy: Drive the adoption of Infrastructure-as-Code practices for consistent, repeatable environment provisioning. Ensure infrastructure pipelines are version-controlled, tested, and aligned with the organisation’s security and compliance requirements.
Engineering Excellence, Software Development Lifecycle Improvement & Governance
- Software Development Lifecycle Ownership: Own and continuously improve the software development lifecycle across your assigned squad(s) and contribute to this across the Sub Domain. Define what good looks like for each stage, from requirements through to production operation, and measure adoption and effectiveness using delivery health metrics including DORA metrics, cycle time, and change failure rate.
- Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment & Quality Gates: Design and maintain continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines with clearly defined quality gates. Define non-regression policies, quality scoring models, and automated validation checks that prevent defects from reaching production.
- Testing Strategy: Define and champion testing strategies across squads, including test pyramid balance, contract testing for distributed systems, integration test approaches, and test environment management. Ensure testing practices scale with system complexity without becoming bottlenecks.
- Organisational Standards & Paved Roads: Define and improve organisational engineering standards through the skills and agent software repository. Create scaffolding tools and compliant-by-default templates that allow squads to spin up new services aligned with company architecture, reducing onboarding friction and architectural drift.
- AI-Augmented Quality Assurance: Implement and tune AI-powered pull request review agents that catch architectural drift, style violations, and common defect patterns. Use these tools to shift your own focus toward high-level logic, security review, and strategic alignment rather than routine code review.
Scalable Mentorship, Knowledge Ecosystems & Technical Guidance
- Knowledge Base Contribution & Curation: Build, contribute to, and curate internal technical documentation and knowledge systems. Ensure domain-specific context (domain models, integration contracts, operational runbooks) is captured accurately. Regularly review, update, and retire outdated content to maintain knowledge accuracy over time.
- Machine-Readable Knowledge: Structure knowledge assets for both human and AI agent consumption, enabling Model Context Protocol-based delivery of domain expertise to AI-assisted development tools without distributing sensitive knowledge to local machines.
Engineering Effectiveness, Innovation & Execution
- Delivery Health Ownership: Support the Engineering Manager and Head of Technology to analyse engineering metrics (DORA metrics, sprint velocity, incident trends, cycle time) to identify systemic bottlenecks in delivery and execution. Go beyond identification: own the diagnosis, propose targeted improvement initiatives, pilot solutions, and measure outcomes.
- FinOps & Cost Governance: Contribute to cloud cost optimisation by evaluating resource consumption patterns, right-sizing recommendations, and cost/token-spend efficiency. Ensure platform performance and reliability targets are met within agreed cost envelopes.
Stakeholder Influence, Governance & Business Alignment
- Technical-to-Business Translation: Partner with the Engineering Manager and Platform Product Lead to effectively translate between technical complexity and business decision-making. Transform complex technical specifications and architectural decisions into stakeholder-friendly summaries and recommendations, leveraging AI-assisted documentation tools where appropriate to accelerate communication without sacrificing accuracy.
- Architecture Review Board Engagement: Actively participate in and contribute to the Architecture Review Board. Present architectural proposals, trade-off analyses, and standards recommendations. Ensure significant technical decisions receive appropriate peer review and organisational alignment before implementation.
What you’ll bring
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 3 years operating at a senior or staff level influencing architecture and engineering practices across multiple teams.
- Demonstrated experience designing and delivering production systems on cloud platforms (Azure and/or Google Cloud Platform) in an enterprise environment.
- Track record of defining or materially improving engineering standards, software development lifecycle practices, or developer tooling that measurably improved team delivery outcomes.
- Experience contributing to or presenting at architecture governance forums (for example Architecture Review Boards or technical design reviews).
- Experience mentoring engineers and building technical capability across teams.
What you’ll experience
- Be a part of Australia’s largest retailer
- Constant mentoring and training provided
- Generous performance based bonus
- 20 days annual leave
- A flexible approach to work
- Premium insurance coverage for you and your dependants
