Company Description
Dentira is one of the fastest-growing, profitable healthcare startups that is building the operating system for dental commerce — modernizing procurement, payments, and operational workflows for multi-site heal care services organizations. We are a Series B company backed by Vista Equity Partners, one of the largest equity firms. As we enter our next phase of scale, we’re looking for a transformational tech leader to help shape and execute our long-term platform vision.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Director of Engineering to define and drive Dentira’s platform strategy, execution and AI innovation across platform. This role will be a member of the leadership team, responsible for the strategy, scale, and execution of the entire engineering organization spanning Product Engineering, Platform & Infrastructure, and AI/ML Engineering. This role owns engineering as a business function: organizational design, technical strategy, and the leadership bench beneath it.
Role Description
- Organizational leadership: Build, structure, and scale a multi-layered engineering organization (Managers → Leads → ICs).
- Strategy & technical direction: Own Dentira's multi-year engineering strategy and technical roadmap across platform, infrastructure, and AI/ML — setting direction that Tech Leads and Staff/Principal engineers translate into architecture and execution.
- Business ownership: Own the engineering budget and headcount plan; make build-vs-buy and vendor decisions with full P&L accountability; forecast engineering costs against company growth targets.
- Talent & leadership development: Define career progression frameworks, leadership hiring standards, and succession plans; personally hire, coach, and develop the Lead/Manager layer.
- Executive partnership: Sit on Dentira's leadership team as a full strategic partner to the CEO — shaping company strategy, not only reporting on engineering health; own and present engineering strategy, technical risk, and investment decisions as one of the Dentira's senior-most technical voice.
- Cross-functional alignment: Partner with Product, Design, GTM, Customer Success, Sales, and Operations leadership to align multi-quarter engineering investment with revenue, retention, and enterprise delivery commitments.
- Engineering excellence & governance: Set the standards for scalability, reliability, security, observability, compliance (incl. healthcare data handling), and incident management across a distributed, multi-country engineering organization.
- Culture & operating model: Define how Dentira's engineering organization works at scale: performance management, velocity metrics (DORA and beyond), remote/distributed operating norms, and a culture of ownership across every layer of the org.
Qualifications
Must Have
- 10+ years of software engineering experience with 4+ years leading through other leaders (Leads/Managers), not only individual squads.
- Demonstrated Team Leadership experience, including mentoring engineers, leading managers, and fostering inclusive, high-performing teams.
- Strong skills in Software Development and Software Design, with experience building scalable, secure, and maintainable systems.
- Very Strong skills in AI/ML systems, LLM integrations, or data pipeline architecture at a strategic (build/buy/partner) level.
- Proven experience scaling engineering organizations from ~20 to 100+ engineers, including building a Lead/Manager layer from the ground up.
- Track record operating as part of a company leadership team — comfortable owning strategy conversations with the leadership, not just presenting status updates.
- Strong architecture judgment across cloud-native systems, microservices, APIs, and CI/CD — enough to set direction and coach Directors, even if no longer hands-on daily.
- Experience building and scaling SaaS products through a high-growth (Series B+ equivalent) stage.
Good to Have
- Experience in healthcare, healthtech, or other regulated SaaS environments (HIPAA, SOC 2, or equivalent compliance exposure).
- Prior title/experience at VP Engineering, SVP Engineering, or CTO level at a comparable-stage company.
- Experience leading distributed, multi-country engineering organizations.
- Familiarity with ETL/integration platforms (Fivetran, Airbyte), MongoDB, and modern observability tooling.
