About the Role
Individual contributor role with hands-on involvement in defining and maintaining the UX workflow of the medical device GUI, including user task flows, screen sequences, interaction logic, usability requirements and use-error prevention. The individual ensures Dornier solutions are safe, effective, efficient and intuitive, by leading usability activities and advocating for user needs and patient safety across the full product development lifecycle. The role supports UI/UX design and software implementation by usability engineering process and supports risk management activities with use-related risk input.
Responsibilities
- Conducts usability engineering/human factors activities in accordance with IEC 62366 and applicable FDA human factors guidance across all development phases in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams including, UI/UX design, software engineering, systems engineering, R&D, Quality Engineering, Regulatory Affairs and Risk and Usability Management.
- Define and maintain the GUI UX workflow for assigned products, including user journeys, task flows, screen-flow logic, navigation structure, dialog/alert flows, system feedback, input/output rules and workflow acceptance criteria.
- Conduct user research, develop use scenarios and task analyses, and analyse cognitive, physical, and situational use contexts to define GUI workflow requirements, critical tasks, user interface requirements and workflow and user interface related usability risks.
- Identify, analyse, and document use-related risks, potential use errors, workflow failure modes, critical tasks and corresponding risk-control measures in alignment with ISO 14971 and the project risk manager.
- Support in planning, conducting, and reporting formative and summative usability evaluations focused on GUI workflow, task completion, comprehension, use-error prevention and risk-control effectiveness in compliance with privacy, usability, and legal requirements, including support in NDAs, site agreements, and informed consent.
- Analyse post-market data such as complaints, service, vigilance and user feedback to identify usability concerns and implement the needed to improve product usability and safety; assist in creation and maintenance of usability engineering file to demonstrate safety, effectiveness and regulatory compliance.
- Adhere to project goals, applicable standards and regulations, QMS and related processes; ensure GUI workflow and usability deliverables are planned, reviewed, approved and maintained under design control.
- Coordinate and work with cross-functional global teams to align GUI workflow decisions with user needs, system constraints, software implementation, clinical workflow and use-related risk controls.
- Translate user needs, clinical/procedural workflows and system requirements into GUI workflow concepts, wireframe-level flow descriptions and usability requirements for implementation by UI/UX design and software engineering.
- Review GUI concepts, prototypes and implemented software increments from a usability perspective, and document findings, rationale, open usability issues and required workflow changes.
- Support risk management activities by providing use-related risk input, usability risk-control proposals and usability evidence; do not own the overall risk management process unless separately assigned.
Qualifications
- EDUCATION: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering (preferably in Biomedical Engineering).
- EXPERIENCE: Minimum 5 years of experience in Usability or Quality Engineering, preferably within the medical devices industry. Hands‑on experience delivering market‑released products and touchscreen GUI design. Skilled in UX research, task analysis, wireframing, prototyping, and A/B testing. Experience with creating experimental design concepts and prototypes. Proficiency with standards like FDA Human Factors Guidance, IEC 62366, ISO 14971, IEC 60601 and ISO 13485. Knowledge and experience in usage of tools like Figma and UXPin is preferable.
