Position Summary
The Manager – Systems Engineering will lead the systems engineering function for offshore wind substation (OSS) projects, ensuring seamless integration of electrical, structural, mechanical, and automation systems from concept to commissioning. This role requires deep technical expertise in offshore energy infrastructure, strong leadership, and the ability to coordinate across multi-disciplinary engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC/EPCI) teams to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective substations.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of system engineers covering electrical, structural, mechanical, protection & control, and SCADA domains.
- Ensure effective workload allocation, competency development, and high performance.
- Foster collaboration across engineering, project management, and site execution teams.
Systems Engineering & Design Oversight
- Own system-level design, requirements management, and interface definition for offshore substations (topsides and jackets/transition pieces).
- Oversee integration of HV equipment (GIS, transformers, reactors, switchgear, HV cables), auxiliary power systems, control/SCADA systems, fire & safety, and structural/marine systems.
- Validate compliance with DNV, IEC, ABS, ISO, and local grid codes.
- Drive system modeling, load flow studies, and power system simulations (e.g., PSCAD, PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory).
Project & Delivery Management
- Work with project directors/managers to define engineering scope, schedule, and deliverables for OSS projects.
- Manage system integration risks, design changes, and technical interfaces with WTG, export cable, and onshore grid connection packages.
- Ensure design meets HSE, quality, and reliability requirements in offshore environments.
- Support FAT, SIT, and commissioning of substation systems.
Stakeholder & Interface Management
- Act as the key systems engineering contact for clients, certifying bodies, and supply chain partners.
- Facilitate design reviews and ensure proper handover between design, procurement, fabrication, transport & installation, and commissioning teams.
- Support bid/proposal teams with technical inputs and risk assessments for future projects.
Process & Continuous Improvement
- Implement structured systems engineering methods (INCOSE, ISO/IEC 15288) tailored for offshore substations.
- Develop lessons-learned databases, interface registers, and system integration checklists.
- Promote digital tools for requirements traceability, 3D/4D model-based engineering, and system validation.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical/Power Systems Engineering, Offshore Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
- Experience:
- 12+ years in large-scale power/energy infrastructure projects, with at least 5 years in offshore wind, oil & gas, or HV substations.
- Proven track record in HVAC/HVDC offshore substation systems engineering, integration, and delivery.
- Experience managing multi-disciplinary engineering teams and system interfaces across EPC/EPCI contracts.
- Familiarity with offshore design standards (DNV-ST-0145, IEC 61892, ISO 19900 series, Lloyd’s, ABS).
- Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of electrical systems (66kV–400kV), protection & control, auxiliary systems, SCADA/telecom, and structural interfaces.
- Proficiency in requirements management tools (DOORS, Jama) and system modeling tools (ETAP, DIgSILENT, MATLAB/Simulink).
- Knowledge of marine environment challenges: corrosion protection, fire safety, redundancy, and maintainability.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong leadership and people management.
- Excellent stakeholder and interface management across international teams.
- Effective communication with clients, certifying authorities, and contractors.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Delivery of system engineering packages on time, within budget, and meeting client requirements.
- Successful certification and acceptance of OSS systems by authorities and grid operators.
- Smooth system integration across WTG, array cable, export cable, and onshore connection packages.
- Reduction of design rework and technical non-conformities.
