Job Summary: We are looking for a skilled Ontologist / Ontology Engineer with strong expertise in formal ontology design, semantic technologies, and knowledge representation. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable ontologies aligned with business requirements.
Formal Ontology Theory
- Strong understanding of Description Logics and OWL profiles (EL, QL, RL, DL)
- Knowledge of open-world vs. closed-world assumptions
Taxonomy & Classification Design
- Ability to design clean and scalable rdfs:subClassOf hierarchies
- Ensure proper use of disjointness, equivalence classes, and avoid cycles/redundancy
Domain Modeling
- Strong judgment in deciding when to create a class, property, named individual, or SKOS concept
SHACL / Constraint Modeling
- Translate business rules into SHACL shapes
- Handle cardinality constraints, required vs. multi-valued fields, controlled vocabularies, and severity levels
Cross-Ontology Integration
- Experience in aligning, importing, and extending ontologies across teams
- Maintain proper import boundaries and consistency
Controlled Vocabulary & Naming Standards
- Define consistent IRI patterns and prefix governance
- Proper use of skos:prefLabel, skos:altLabel, and skos:definition
Competency Question–Driven Design
- Ability to gather requirements using competency questions
- Map business questions to ontology axioms and relationships
Versioning & Change Management
- Manage ontology evolution and versioning
- Handle deprecation (owl:deprecated), backward compatibility, and migration impact
Tool Proficiency
- Hands-on experience with ontology design tools (e.g., Protégé or similar)
Required Skills and Qualification
- Strong knowledge of OWL, RDF, RDFS, SKOS, and SHACL
- Experience with semantic web technologies
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Experience working in enterprise data/knowledge graph environments
- Understanding of data integration and semantic interoperability
