About the role
AI Engineer | WheelForge
WheelForge is an AI-enabled construction deep tech company building intelligent systems to improve how projects are designed, planned, coordinated, and delivered.
We’re looking for a driven AI Engineer with hands-on experience building, deploying, and maintaining AI systems in production. You’ll own features from problem definition through deployment and ongoing improvement, with a strong focus on accuracy, reliability, and real user needs.
What you’ll do
• Build AI systems that interpret project documents, extract structured information, identify inconsistencies, and support project coordination.
• Develop LLM workflows, retrieval pipelines, and agents that connect domain knowledge with software tools and business processes.
• Build reliability through output validation, deterministic checks, retries, fallbacks, and human review where needed.
• Create evaluation datasets and automated regression checks. Use logging, tracing, and monitoring to identify failures and prevent them from recurring.
• Own backend services, APIs, and data pipelines. Make practical trade-offs across accuracy, latency, cost, and complexity.
• Work with domain experts to translate their knowledge into software and improve it through real user feedback.
What we’re looking for
• Experience shipping and maintaining AI systems used by real users, with ownership beyond the prototype stage.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals, including APIs, databases, testing, and cloud deployment.
• Practical experience with LLMs, structured outputs, tool calling, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and evaluation.
• An understanding of AI failure modes and experience improving quality using production data.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills: break down complex problems, challenge assumptions, and reason from first principles to develop reliable solutions.
• Strong ownership and drive: turn an ambiguous problem into a working solution, ship it, and follow through.
• Clear communication and sound judgment about when to use AI, conventional code, or human review.
Nice to have
• Experience with document AI, OCR, multimodal models, or technical drawings.
• Familiarity with construction, manufacturing, or CAD/BIM workflows.
• Experience with durable workflows or building products at an early-stage startup.
