Description

Overview


The Co-op Medical Assistant provides clinical support, including initial preparation of the patient for examination/visit, assisting the provider during examinations, cleaning, stocking and maintenance of exam rooms, maintenance of diagnostic equipment, charting, and patient education under the supervision of the Clinical Floor Supervisor and in collaboration with an experienced Medical Assistant.


Responsibilities


  1. Support the Medical Assistant in rooming patients, which includes but is not limited to: escort patients to examination rooms, prepare them for the provider by completing medication reconciliation, obtaining and recording in the electronic medical record system the patient’s medical history, chief complaint, assess vitals, complete care gaps and any additional care as needed or requested.
  2. Support telehealth visits: similar to rooming patients, the Co-op MA will work alongside an experienced MA to prepare the patient for the provider portion of the visit, this includes identifying the chief complaint, completing a medication reconciliation, addressing care gaps, confirming the patient’s pharmacy
  3. Prepare exam rooms for patient exams, ensuring that exam rooms are neat, clean, well-stocked and properly prepared in collaboration with the MA team.
  4. Collect urine, blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing working alongside an experienced MA
  5. Operate electrocardiogram (EKG) or other equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests alongside an experienced MA
  6. Support the MA staff in preparing and administering medications and vaccines as directed by the provider with appropriate written orders
  7. Provide education to patients regarding treatment procedures, medications, diets, providers’ instructions and preparation necessary for diagnostic tests, x-rays and laboratory examinations
  8. Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies alongside an experienced MA
  9. Perform and document point-of-care equipment testing daily before beginning patient care alongside an experienced MA
  10. Keep patients’ personal health information confidential, discussing it only with other personnel who are involved in the patient’s care, treatment or payment of services
  11. Maintain infection control checklist
  12. Maintain patient records per documentation protocol.
Requirements

 Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school diploma/GED or actively enrolled in high school
  2. Currently enrolled in a medical assistant training program at an accredited institution
  3. Basic life support certification
  4. Availability to work evenings until 9 p.m. and occasional Saturday mornings
