Description
The Senior Cataloger has the responsibility of cataloging a variety of materials including books, media, non-traditional materials and emedia.
· Performs original and complex copy cataloging of print and non-print formats in a consistent and timely fashion.
· Provides classification for print and non-print resources.
· Enters and upgrades existing MARC records to fully implement cataloging standards.
· Assists with the selection of materials for specific formats under the supervision of the Materials Manager.
· Assists in research, evaluation, and recommendations for emerging technologies and new formats.
· Works with the public services departments on item discoverability and overlapping workflows.
· Consults with partner catalogers in the consortium on shared records, including bibliographic records and authority control.
· Provides leadership in discovering, recommending, testing and adopting new technologies and procedures for cataloging and processing efficiencies.
· Keeps up to date on cataloging, classification and technology through professional reading and workshop attendance.
· Plans and executes special cataloging assignments, and contributes to the development of procedures, manuals, and reports.
· Participates in professional library organizations and assist library and professional organizations with presentations and information sharing.
· Takes part in collection maintenance as necessary: weeding and mending.
· Takes part in processing of new materials as necessary.
· Presents a professional, respectful and friendly image to library vendors, customers and other employees.
Requirements
· Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program preferred.
· Thorough knowledge of RDA, AACR2, Library of Congress Subject and Name headings, Dewey Decimal Classification, MARC formats and principles of authority control.
· Knowledge of and experience with an online ILS system (Innovative’s Polaris preferred) and an online bibliographic utility such as OCLC’s Connexion.
· Critical judgment skills in cataloging responsibilities.
· Proven leadership skills including team or project management preferred.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills.
· Positive work attitude and have the ability to interact well with others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
· Physical requirements include: Mostly sedentary work. Lifting/Moving – exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or the amount of force necessary to frequently carry, lift, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
· The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
