The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Maintenance Custodian to support a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment for WSDOT employees and the traveling public. In this role, you will perform custodial services, minor building maintenance, and landscape upkeep at the Southwest Region Area-1 Headquarters (SWR-HQ) and Main Street facilities. This position plays an important role in maintaining safe, functional, and welcoming workspaces. The successful candidate will take pride in maintaining facilities and supporting day-to-day operations that contribute to WSDOT’s mission.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Custodian will:

  • Perform routine custodial duties, including cleaning and disinfecting restrooms, washing windows, dusting, and spot cleaning throughout facilities.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, strip, and wax hard-surface floors to maintain safe, clean building conditions.
  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles and restock restroom supplies to ensure facilities remain clean and operational.
  • Order, track, and maintain inventory of janitorial supplies and materials.
  • Conduct minor plumbing maintenance, including repairing fixtures, clearing clogged drains, and maintaining water lines.
  • Maintain facility grounds by mowing lawns, trimming shrubs and trees, collecting leaves, removing snow, and spreading bark dust.
  • Clean exterior areas, including parking lots, sidewalks, walkways, and smoking areas, and perform pressure washing as needed.
  • Perform minor building maintenance such as replacing lightbulbs, changing filters, painting, repairing flushometers, securing the building, maintaining tools and equipment, and attending required trainings or meetings.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Custodial Cleaning and Sanitation: Demonstrated ability to safely perform and prioritize cleaning, sanitizing, and general custodial tasks to maintain a clean, safe, and healthy work environment.
  • Grounds Maintenance and Equipment Operation: Knowledge of and ability to safely perform landscape and grounds maintenance activities, including the operation and basic maintenance of landscaping tools and equipment.
  • Basic Computer Skills: Ability to use basic computer functions, including email and internet searches, to support daily work tasks and communication.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.


In addition to the above, the following are also required

  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain. 
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

  • Basic Building Maintenance: Ability to perform basic building maintenance tasks, such as minor repairs, routine upkeep, and facility support activities to help maintain safe and functional buildings.


In addition to the above, the following are also preferred: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Herbicide Applicator's License

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
