Principal, Software Engineer

Position: Principal Engineer People Technology (Payroll Modernization) Location: Hybrid (India Development Center Bangalore/Chennai) Team: Enterprise People Technology, Walmart Global Tech Position Summary As a Principal Engineer, you will drive the full-stack development and architectural design of scalable, secure, and high-performance cloud-native systems on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Your work will directly impact millions of Walmart associates globally by modernizing payroll systems and enhancing the overall associate experience. This is a highly strategic and technical leadership role, requiring hands-on engineering expertise, mentoring capabilities, and the ability to influence technology direction across teams. About the Team The Enterprise People Technology Payroll Modernization team is part of Walmart Global Tech's Enterprise Business Services (EBS). We focus on deploying and improving People technology solutions at scale. With a global footprint, we're modernizing the platforms used by millions of associates worldwide, enabling smoother operations in HR, payroll, and employee services. EBS is a cross-functional powerhouse delivering optimized and data-driven technology for Walmart's Finance, Procurement, HR, and Digital Experience functions across global markets. What You'll Do - Lead the design and development of end-to-end full-stack applications with scalability and resilience. - Architect cloud-native systems using GCP services such as GKE, Cloud Run, and Cloud Functions. - Build and optimize APIs (RESTful/GraphQL) and modern frontend interfaces using React, Angular, or Vue.js. - Drive the adoption of DevOps and CI/CD practices, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Deployment Manager). - Guide the team on serverless and container-based development best practices. - Conduct technical reviews, enforce coding standards, and ensure high-quality software delivery. - Collaborate with product, UX, and data teams to transform business needs into scalable technology. - Mentor Staff and Senior Engineers, and serve as a strategic technical advisor. - Stay informed on industry trends and continuously evaluate tools to improve development velocity. What You'll Bring - 10+ years of full-stack development experience with recent leadership in architect roles. - Deep knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, or Go. - Expertise with React (preferred) or similar frontend frameworks. - Strong experience in building and deploying cloud-native systems on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). - Hands-on with Docker, Kubernetes, and event-driven architectures. - Proficiency with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps, and production-grade cloud systems. - Experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases (BigQuery, PostgreSQL, Firestore). - GCP Professional Certification (e.g., Cloud Architect, Developer, or Data Engineer). - Exposure to serverless platforms, observability tools, and large-scale data pipelines or ML workflows. - Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
