The Firefighter/EMT participates in fire suppression, emergency medical response, technical rescue, fire education, and prevention activities. Working a 24-hour shift schedule, this position functions as part of a highly trained team responsible for protecting life and property through emergency response and community risk reduction efforts.

Firefighters maintain stations, equipment, and apparatus; assist with pre-incident planning; and participate in regular training to remain proficient with current fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical procedures. The role requires staying current with evolving techniques and integrating new practices into training as needed. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fire Captain and is evaluated through observation, reports, and demonstrated performance.

Position Duties

  • Participates in incident response including firefighting operations, operation of fire apparatus and other equipment as required, responds and participates in remediation activities of chemical spills, hazardous materials, and other related incidents, and responds to technical rescue calls operating various equipment.
  • Responds to and provides care for emergency medical incidents as an EMT.
  • When needed and qualified, drives apparatus to incident scene, properly places apparatus to establish water supply or other needs, ensures proper operation and pressure of hose, issues equipment, monitors radio traffic for necessary responses, and returns fire apparatus and related equipment to service after incident response.
  • Inspects station and equipment for proper appearance and condition, cleans and maintains station and grounds; maintains equipment, and re-stocks supplies as needed.
  • Performs maintenance and cleaning of fire apparatus, equipment, station building, and related facilities.
  • Assists with the preparation fire reports and other manual and digital record keeping, participates in special projects as required, participates in training, fire pre-planning, fire inspections, fire education and prevention programming, maintenance and testing of hose, pumpers, and hydrants. and other related activities.
  • Participates in training on shift and may assist with onboarding and training new employees and when required on other occasions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of modern methods of attacking fire emergencies and of the use and maintenance of firefighting apparatus and equipment.
  • Knowledge of incident response including response to hazardous materials spills, ocean and general rescue techniques, and emergency medical service calls.
  • Knowledge of the hazards of firefighting and appropriate safety precautions.
  • Some knowledge of departmental rules and regulations.
  • Some knowledge of Village streets and layout.
  • Some knowledge of the application of information technology to the work of the department.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, officials, and members of the public.
  • Ability to prepare records of work activities.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate all required equipment and apparatus.

Safety:
This position requires enforcing and following all Village of Pinehurst and OSHA safety regulations.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion.
  • Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess visual acuity to size up the color, volume, and extent of fire involvement at fire scenes, to operate heavy fire apparatus in emergency situations, and to prepare records and reports.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.  Subject to extreme cold below 32 degrees and heat temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.
  • Work is subject to noise to require shouting in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
  • Subject to Hazards including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical part, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places.  Exposure to high heat and/or chemicals.
  • Work is subject to atmospheric conditions where one or more of the following conditions exists: fumes, odors, dust, mists gases or poor ventilation.
  • Work is subject to oil exposures and other fluids.
  • Work requires PPE and respirator to be worn.
  • Work is subject to infectious diseases.

Other Qualifications

Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of courses and seminars in fire service; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.


Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license or equivalent.  Possession of NC Firefighter certification. Possession of NC Hazardous Material Responder I Certification.  Possession of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) certification.  Ability to obtain other certifications, meet department specific career development policy guidelines, and Village specific requirements.
