About the role

Director of Business Development

Veterinary United

Inspire. Empower. Lead. Evolve. Believe.

At Veterinary United, our purpose is simple: to make veterinary medicine more positive, sustainable, and connected. As an independent, veterinarian-owned, and vision-driven organization, we’re committed to supporting teams, patients, and clients with integrity, innovation, and compassion. With 24 practices across Michigan — and continued growth on the horizon — we’re seeking a strategic, relationship-driven Director of Business Development to help lead our next chapter of expansion.

The Opportunity

As our Director of Business Development, you’ll shape the growth strategy of one of Michigan’s most forward-thinking veterinary networks. Partnering closely with executive leadership, analytics, finance, and operations, you’ll identify, evaluate, and cultivate partnership opportunities with practices that share our values and vision. Your mission: drive intentional, values-aligned growth that strengthens our ability to serve communities and elevate veterinary medicine, both in and outside of Michigan!

What You’ll Do

  • Lead Strategic Growth Initiatives: Identify, evaluate, and execute partnership and acquisition opportunities throughout Michigan (and beyond).
  • Develop and Manage a Growth Pipeline: Build and maintain a database of aligned clinics, ensuring that every potential partnership reflects VU’s mission and culture.
  • Collaborate Across Departments: Work closely with Analytics, Finance, and Operations to ensure sustainable and data-driven growth decisions.
  • Represent the Veterinary United Brand: Serve as a cultural ambassador and trusted relationship builder through in-person meetings, industry events, and ongoing outreach.
  • Conduct Market Analysis: Identify trends, geographic needs, and new service opportunities that align with organizational goals.
  • Report to Leadership: Deliver regular updates and recommendations to executive leaders on market intelligence, partnership potential, and growth performance.
  • Champion VU’s Core Values: Model what it means to Inspire, Empower, Lead, Evolve, and Believe — in every relationship and conversation.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, or related field (MBA preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience in business development, healthcare partnerships, or strategic growth — ideally within veterinary or healthcare sectors
  • Proven ability to build long-term professional relationships and negotiate partnership opportunities
  • Strategic mindset with strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively across teams
  • A genuine passion for making the field of veterinary medicine better — for the client, patient, AND team!

What Veterinary United Offers

  • Competitive base salary with potential performance-based incentives
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage (monthly stipend toward multiple plan options)
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • 401(k) with company match after 12 months
  • Planet Fitness membership
  • A culture that celebrates authenticity, growth, and balance
  • The chance to make a tangible difference in an organization that truly believes in what it does

About the company

At Veterinary United , we’re more than a group of practices-we’re a family, and our values are the driving force behind every decision we make. At the core of these values is a strong focus on what’s best for you, your team, and your practice. Our family of hospitals all support each other, operating like a hub and spoke model. This model creates a strong connection between each of our locations and allows us to deliver higher quality care to the pets in those areas. When hospitals support each other in providing the very best care for patients, we’re able to grow together and not only meet our goals, but exceed them.
