About the role

VIP is seeking an entry-level Technical Writer to join the Knowledge Team to develop and maintain documentation and training materials for our expanding software product line. If you've enjoyed a beer, soft drink, glass of wine, or spirit lately, there's a good chance that one of our applications was used in its journey from the supplier to your glass.

The Knowledge Team’s goal is to help our customers in the beverage industry use VIP applications to their full potential by providing easy-to-use content. Our technical writers work closely with product owners and development teams to track and understand product changes. They collaborate with support and implementation teams to write monthly release notes, keep existing content up to date, and develop new content.

Position Type: Full Time, Hybrid - will be required to report to our office in Colchester, VT

Starting Pay: $22.00 - $24.00/hour (Level 1)

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn complex systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and write clear, concise documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.

The ideal candidate has a desire and aptitude to:

  • Continuously learn.
  • Learn complex systems in any way necessary: read through technical details, ask questions to experts at VIP, and try features out for yourself.
  • Turn complex processes into clear, concise, and user-friendly written documentation and supporting visuals (screenshots, GIFs, flowcharts, etc).
  • Follow a style guide and the principles of technical communication. 
  • Have empathy for the end-user and the reader of your documentation.
  • Communicate thoughtfully and clearly and with team members and others at VIP. 
  • Follow the deadlines and expectations set by your manager and the needs of the product teams you’ll work with.

Primary responsibilities:

The writer will be assigned to several VIP applications. For those applications:

  • Create monthly release notes that document new enhancements. 
  • Create knowledge bases from the ground up for new applications. 
  • Update existing articles based on new enhancements and requests from other VIPers.

Typical duties:

  • Draft content in Google Docs. 
  • Take screenshots and annotate them to supplement written documentation. 
  • Read through technical details, ask questions to subject matter experts (SMEs), and try features out for yourself to fully understand them.
  • Check Jira daily for new requests, and keep tickets updated for visibility.
  • Work with the team lead to prioritize your deliverables. 
  • Go through edits from a team editor, and update your draft as needed.
  • As you advance, you’ll take more initiative to determine what needs to be updated and to manage your time.
