About the role

At Vattenfall, we're here to help the UK reach net zero by creating district heating networks for its cities. As the European market leader, we've built and operated networks in Uppsala, Amsterdam and Berlin. In partnership with local authorities, commercial organisations and communities, our mission is to free UK cities from fossil-fuelled heating. In the UK, we are delivering low-carbon heating in London, Bristol and Midlothian. This role sits within the Bristol Buried Networks team, which is focused on the planning, installation and management of heat network infrastructure in the highway. These works involve major civil and mechanical engineering projects across the city and form the backbone of the city-scale heat networks. The purpose of this role is to ensure that the complex and large-scale delivery of buried heat network infrastructure in Bristol is managed in a safe, structured, and efficient way, while also building the next generation of project managers within Vattenfall Heat UK. The Project Manager Associate – Heat provides essential support to Senior Project Managers and the wider project team in the planning, governance, and execution of civil and mechanical engineering works. These projects are fundamental to the creation of Bristol's low-carbon district heating system, which will decarbonise heat supply for communities and businesses across the city. This role exists at the intersection of project administration and project leadership. On one hand, it provides practical project support such as financial administration, risk management, documentation, and coordination. On the other, it actively develops project management skills by leading sub-projects, managing processes, and taking ownership of specific work packages. This dual focus ensures the successful delivery of today's projects while preparing the post-holder for a future role as a fully accountable Project Manager. The post-holder will therefore play a visible part in ensuring projects are delivered to time, cost, quality, and safety standards, whilst also gaining the technical, commercial, and stakeholder experience required to progress their career within the Vattenfall project management model. Key Responsibilities / Duties Support Senior Project Managers in day-to-day delivery, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to high quality standards. Assist with project steering, scheduling, procurement, contract management, financial forecasting, risk management, and governance processes. Manage specific sub-projects, work packages, and communication streams. Provide project administration, including onboarding/offboarding team members, organising meetings, and managing PPE and logistics. Lead or contribute to risk workshops, maintain risk registers, and provide input into project and corporate risk reporting. Support steering group and tollgate decision-making processes by preparing presentation material and reports. Maintain project documentation and governance, ensuring lessons learned and project handbooks are up to date. Liaise with external stakeholders including contractors, consultants, Bristol City Council, and members of the public. Contribute to management reporting, budget control, and invoice/purchase requisition processing (SAP).
