Job Title: Value Engineer – Thermal Systems for Energy Storage and Power Electronics
Job Description
This role focuses on architecting and optimizing advanced thermal solutions for energy storage systems and power electronics across a diverse product portfolio. You will lead the design, modeling, and validation of thermal architectures, ensuring that solutions deliver high performance while meeting cost, reliability, manufacturability, and regulatory requirements. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you will translate complex thermal challenges into clear design guidance and help bring thermally complex products from development into volume production.
Responsibilities
- Architect, design, model, and validate thermal solutions for energy storage systems (ESS) and power electronics.
- Build detailed CFD models and develop instrumented thermal test vehicles to validate designs against simulation results.
- Create thermal solutions that balance performance, form, and function across the product portfolio.
- Optimize designs for thermal performance, manufacturability (DFM/DFA), acoustics, size, reliability, and cost.
- Provide clear, actionable thermal design guidance to cross-functional engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle.
- Identify, evaluate, and select components for passive, forced-air, liquid, and two-phase thermal solutions.
- Manage relationships with thermal suppliers, supporting component selection, validation, and integration into products.
- Partner with validation and reliability teams to define thermal test parameters, methods, and acceptance criteria.
- Collaborate with software and firmware teams to establish thermal policies and limits for control algorithms.
- Apply value analysis and value engineering (VAVE) techniques to drive cost reduction while maintaining or improving thermal performance.
- Support new product development (NPD) initiatives with robust thermal architectures and design reviews.
- Contribute to failure analysis and root-cause investigations related to thermal performance and reliability.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in thermal design and electronics cooling.
- Expert-level knowledge of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.
- Expertise in modeling passive cooling, forced-air cooling, liquid cooling, two-phase systems, battery thermal behavior, and solar radiation effects.
- Proficiency in sizing and selecting fans, radiators, heat sinks, heat pipes, and related thermal components.
- Experience with instrumentation and data acquisition methods for thermal validation and testing.
- Expert proficiency in Ansys, Flotherm, Star-CCM+, or a comparable CFD package.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 30%, including international travel.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex thermal concepts clearly to diverse stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Master's degree in mechanical engineering with a specialization in heat transfer.
- Demonstrated record of bringing thermally complex products from development into volume production.
- Experience developing thermal solutions for outdoor NEMA/IP-rated products.
- Experience in validation testing, product reliability engineering, and failure analysis related to thermal performance.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD tools, preferably Creo or SolidWorks.
- Experience designing thermal solutions specifically for battery energy storage systems.
- Familiarity with battery pack failure modes, including thermal runaway, outgassing, and propagation.
- Working knowledge of UL 9540A regulatory requirements and associated testing considerations.
- Experience applying value analysis/value engineering (VAVE) methods for cost reduction in thermal designs.
- Experience supporting new product development (NPD) programs with advanced thermal architectures.
Work Environment
You will work in a collaborative engineering environment that emphasizes innovation, rigorous analysis, and cross-functional teamwork. The role involves extensive use of advanced CFD tools such as Ansys, Flotherm, or Star-CCM+, as well as 3D CAD platforms like Creo or SolidWorks. You will regularly engage with validation laboratories and test setups that use instrumentation and data acquisition systems for thermal testing. The position includes close collaboration with electrical, mechanical, software, firmware, validation, and reliability teams, as well as external suppliers of thermal components. Travel of up to 30%, including international trips, supports supplier visits, on-site testing, and cross-site collaboration. The work setting encourages structured problem-solving, clear technical communication, and continuous improvement in thermal design and product reliability.
