We’re a nonprofit organization dedicated to fueling research, innovation, and entrepreneurship at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM). From advancing cutting-edge technologies to supporting startup creation, we work to bring big ideas to life — and we’re looking for a Technology Commercialization Associate to help support our technology transfer efforts.
The Role
We’re looking for a Part-Time Technology Commercialization Associate to join our small, collaborative team during an exciting time of growth.
In this role, you’ll support the evaluation, management, and commercialization of UWM technologies. You’ll receive hands-on exposure to intellectual property management, market research, patenting, licensing, and startup support — working closely with the Technology Commercialization team.
This is a temporary, part-time position (approximately 25–29 hours per week) with a hybrid schedule. Staff are expected to participate in one in-person team meeting per week unless prior approval is granted.
This position is temporary and will continue for the duration of the hiring and training process for a new full-time employee.
What You’ll Be Doing
Technology Evaluation & Research:
- Meet with inventors and support evaluation of new invention disclosures
- Conduct prior art searches and market research to assess commercialization potential
- Research external companies and potential industry partners
Intellectual Property & Commercialization Support:
- Assist with preparation of patenting, licensing, and marketing materials
- Support patent portfolio management in coordination with outside counsel
- Prepare patent-related documentation, including disclosures, assignments, and declarations
- Learn and use Inteum software to document technology assessments and commercialization activity
Project & Administrative Support:
- Prepare meeting notes, summaries, correspondence, and internal documentation
- Assist with agreements, reports, and commercialization projects as needed
Requirements
What We’re Looking For
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Life Science, Physical Science, Engineering, or a related field
(or a non-science bachelor’s degree with relevant industry experience) - Strong analytical, research, and writing skills
- Ability to translate technical concepts for a broad audience
- Excellent organization, attention to detail, and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with a small, mission-driven team
- Professional communication skills and comfort working with faculty, researchers, and external partners
Preferred Experience:
- Advanced degree, industry experience, or exposure to patents or intellectual property
- Interest in technology transfer, innovation, or entrepreneurship ecosystems
