We are seeking eager healthcare workers, COTA, and PTAs who are interested in growing their career towards becoming an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP). Training and certification costs will be covered by us and you will work alongside a certified ATP. ATPs service patients through evaluation, selection, assembly and repair, and instruction on safe use of complex home medical equipment. Complex rehab equipment products and services include medically necessary, individually configured manual and power wheelchair systems, adaptive seating systems, alternative positioning systems, and activities of daily living assistive devices that require evaluation, fitting, configuration, adjustment, or programming. These products and services are designed to meet the specific and unique medical and functional needs of an individual with a primary diagnosis resulting from a congenital disorder, progressive or degenerative neuromuscular disease, or from an injury or trauma.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The HME Rehab Equipment Specialist Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) provides service to UW Health Care Direct patients through evaluation, selection, assembly, and instruction on safe use of complex home medical equipment. Complex rehab equipment products and services include medically necessary, individually configured manual and power wheelchair systems, adaptive seating systems, alternative positioning systems, and activities of daily living assistive devices that require evaluation, fitting, configuration, adjustment, or programming. These products and services are designed to meet the specific and unique medical and functional needs of an individual with a primary diagnosis resulting from a congenital disorder, progressive or degenerative neuromuscular disease, or from an injury or trauma. Appropriate documentation is a critical component of this position to ensure all company policies and regulatory requirements are met.
The job works under the direction of the Senior Manager of Home Medical Equipment but works with a large degree of independence. The HME Rehab Equipment Specialist ATP will help train non-ATP staff. They will also be part of the direct in-person equipment selection process for patients working with non-ATP staff as required by payer policies.
- Obtain and maintain in good standing the certification of Assistive Technology Professional from the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA).
- Assists in evaluation and selection of mobility and assistive equipment as part of a multi-disciplinary team that may include a PT, OT, and physician.
- Assesses appropriateness of equipment based on the patient’s ability to use and evaluates patient’s home environment to ensure safe use of equipment.
- Adjusts equipment to meet special needs of individual patients ranging from pediatric to adult with a wide range of disabilities.
- Instructs patients ranging from pediatric to adult in the proper use of equipment, primarily complex positions and mobility equipment, per policy, using the teach and teach-back method.
- Maintains knowledge of seating and mobility products from multiple manufacturers to select the appropriate products given patient’s medical needs, lifestyle, and overall condition. Must be familiar with contraindication for all products and liability issues.
- Reviews and explains all required documentation at each patient contact.
- Assures timely completion of build sheets and work orders, which may involve research of components, calculation of equipment price/payer reimbursement and preparation of quotes for patients, referral sources and insurance companies. Prepares associated paperwork for prior authorizations (such as prescriptions, supporting medical documentation, justification letter)
- Maintains up-to-date, accurate information regarding payer requirements to assure timely and accurate reimbursement
- Solves a wide variety of customer issues and questions, while referring issues out of their scope to practice to the appropriate clinician or other department within UW Health Care Direct.
