USDA Forest Service Office/Lab and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (FS) within the Pacific Northwest Research Station (PNWRS) located in Seattle, Washington. Remote participation is preferred if the applicant is not local (Seattle Area). At the heart of the USDA Forest Service's mission is their purpose. Everything they do is intended to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. They are responsible for managing and protecting 154 national forests and 20 national grasslands in 43 states and Puerto Rico. The USDA Forest Service is seeking a full-stack developer to support the development and maintenance of software applications related to wildland fire and smoke science. The selected candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and software developers to enhance existing applications and develop new tools to support decision-making and analysis in the areas of wildland fire behavior, smoke forecasting, and emissions modeling. The incumbent will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including: - Designing, developing, and implementing new features and functionality for web-based applications using modern front-end and back-end technologies. - Maintaining and improving existing software applications, ensuring they are secure, scalable, and user-friendly. - Collaborating with subject matter experts to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions. - Participating in agile software development practices, such as code reviews, testing, and deployment. - Providing technical support and troubleshooting for end-users. - Documenting code, processes, and best practices. Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. - 2-5 years of experience in full-stack web development, including proficiency in languages such as JavaScript, Python, and SQL. - Experience with modern front-end frameworks and libraries (e.g., React, Angular, Vue.js). - Familiarity with back-end technologies such as Django, Flask, or Node.js. - Knowledge of relational databases and SQL. - Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. - Excellent communication and collaboration abilities. - Experience working in an agile software development environment is preferred. This is a full-time, 1-year fellowship opportunity with the potential for extension. The selected candidate will receive a competitive stipend and benefits package.
