About the role

It can be a stressful time for new graduates. Some college students are ready to jump-start their careers, while others may not know what's next. The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) works to ensure students have a successful undergraduate experience and creates a realistic pathway for them to graduate to secure a job. The majority of UMR students are looking to find careers in the medical field. Being in the heart of the med city, of course, many opportunities await. Lori Carrell, UMR's chancellor, says 95% of the 2024 class is employed at the Mayo Clinic, and about 2/3 of its students go on to advance study within the first six months after they graduate. Carrell said those numbers are a product of student success coaches who guide them through their four years into their career launch. "A student who's gone back home and is unsure of their next step, there is no shame. if there hasn't been guided reflection for the student to discover, really, what gives them meaning and purpose, then seeking out a mentor who can help with that sort of reflection is really imperative," Carrell said. Because UMR specializes in health, Carrell also said many positions are in high demand, specifically in research, patient care, and public and mental health.
