About the role

UNICEF USA NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL

VOLUNTEER ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

2026-2027

ROLE

UNICEF USA’s National Youth Council members play a vital role in advancing child rights and ensuring young people’s voices shape decisions at the national level. As leaders within UNICEF USA, Council members elevate the lived experiences, perspectives, and priorities of children and young people across the country. Members activate their role through three core competencies—Lead, Represent, and Act—by educating the volunteer network on key issues affecting children and youth, advocating for policy and systems change, and bringing youth voice into spaces where young people are often excluded. Working in close partnership with staff and organizational leadership, National Youth Council members help embed youth voice into the organization’s culture, strategy, and operations, ensuring that young people are not only heard, but meaningfully influence change. Council members also advance child-centered governance by promoting formal mechanisms that embed youth voice in decision-making, such as child impact statements, youth advisory bodies, and children’s budgets. These efforts help translate youth priorities into concrete policy, funding, and systems change
