About the role

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations programme working towards a better urban future. Its mission is to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. UN-Habitat's mandate is to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The programme runs a diverse portfolio of over 400 projects every year that aim to foster sustainable urban development, improve infrastructure and basic services, and promote inclusive urban planning and governance across the world. UN-Habitat is seeking an Urban Planner Consultant to provide programme support for West Africa. The consultant will be responsible for the following: • Providing technical advisory support to UN-Habitat's work in West Africa, particularly related to urban planning, housing, and urban infrastructure. • Contribute to the implementation and monitoring of UN-Habitat's programmes in West Africa. • Provide recommendations and guidance to the UN-Habitat West Africa regional office on urban policy, planning, and programming. • Assist in reporting, knowledge management, and communication activities related to UN-Habitat's work in the region. • Undertake any other tasks as requested by the supervisor. The successful candidate should have the following qualifications and experience: • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in urban planning, architecture, geography, or a related field. • At least 5 years of proven experience in urban planning, housing, and infrastructure projects, preferably in developing countries. • Strong knowledge of urban planning principles, tools, and best practices, with experience applying them in a developing country context. • Familiarity with urban development challenges and priorities in West Africa. • Excellent analytical, research, and report writing skills. • Fluency in English and French. Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage. • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment. This is a full-time consultancy position for 6 months, with the possibility of extension. The consultant will be based in Abuja, Nigeria, with occasional travel to other countries in the West Africa region.
